Transmission stopped working with no prior notice while driving on freeway at 55mph befor this happend I did not have any problems with the transmision at all it just stiopped working it seems like the gears are nor not being enguaged at all the only gear working is park. This is the wirdest thing because the transmission does not slip or leak and it pulls perfectly and shifts just fine and all of a sudden it will not go into drive or reverse

Check the Transmission Cable. It could be half torn Transmission cable. You may have to replace the cable then

Transmission model is AX4N.The reason that the car/trans only acts up after long drives is the heat.As metal components heat up,tolerances and clearances that were marginal or borderline before with moderate heat, become excessive clearances when really hot.More than likely there are internal transmission components with excessive wear. Many problematic areas inside the AX4N trans is the pump, where the oil pump driveshaft bearing wears out,the seal is torn, and hydraulic pressure falls off, common failure point in these units. The other areas are typical to all automatic transmissions, the clutch packs and bands wear and lose clearance.as well as some of the bushings inside the unit.I just rebuilt recently a trans exactly identical to your car,V8...4.6Ltr Lincoln, and it had minimal damage inside, but enough to throw the check engine light on with a Torque Convertor Clutch trouble code. The TCC was slipping excessively, and the vehicle computer recognized this, and illuminated the CEL.Chances are good that the damage inside your trans will be minimal, but now is the time to consider rebuilding it and restoring all the hydraulic circuits integrity, and resetting all the clutch pack and band clearances with new clutches, steels, and bands.A remanufactured torque convertor should also be installed along with rebuilding the trans.Be careful as to who does the work on the trans should you decide to rebuild it,as some people's definition of a rebuild doesn't quite qualify as anything more than a patch/repair job.A complete rebuild consists of tearing the trans completely down, loading it into a parts cleaner, and thoroughly cleaning it.From this point, the rebuild begins, including a banner overhaul kit,new steels, bands, seals, thrust washers as required,Electronic Pressure Control solenoid, all new bushings, set clutch pack clearances to factory specifications, along with setting unit endplay, and a remanufactured torque convertor.Good luck.

You will have to have the solenoid body replaced in the tranny and have the PCM reprogrammed.

Unfortunately it sounds like your automatic transmission has suffered a catastrophic failure. But to be sure, allow your vehicle to warm up to normal operating temprature, pull the oil level dipstick for the transmission and check the level. It should be in the checker portion of the stick to be correct level. If it is not, adding fluid may help the condition temporarily. Check for leaks while the engine is running. Have Lincoln or transmission specialist have a look. When it comes to transmissions in general, it is best to let the pros handle it for youl

This's about a 1991 190E Mercedes...first symptom was,it felt like the rear tires gunna fly off on the freeway (?)@ about 55mph? checked em,in the dark of course...bfriend convinces me its safe, just put em...

Well for starters the transmission fluid should not have a charcol color tint to it. It should be bright red or or slightly darker depending on when the fluid was last changed. The transmission oil pan should be removed in order to take a closer look at the fluid and to see if there is any metal debris sitting on the bottom of the pan. Definitely start with the transmission especially if you have no reverse gear because that means either the front pump or the reverse gear clutch plates are bad. It's highly possible especially with the trans fluid being a charcol grey color that there some internal damage in the transmission. Another way to confirm this is to smell the transmission fluid off the dipstick and see if it smells burnt. If it is burnt you will know it the odor is significant. One of the reasons also I say start with the transmission is because it can be a costly repair and it would be better to know right away if your gonna need to replace it before spending on other repairs first.

When driving and speed goes between 45 and 55 mph and when going up steep hill transmissions and car shakes when driving on straight away pass 55mph it stops shaking

I have the same problem, you need to change de oil transmission or try an additive for aut. trans that resolve the problem for a while, but is almost most better changing de oil.

Rear tank full and selected for use but draws from the front

hi your symptoms suggest that you have slight blockage either in fuel line or most likely at point where rear tank fuel line enters the switch over reason ? you say runs ok on rear tank at 55mph? but when demand for more fuel / speed above that pump /engine cannot deliver ? due to narrowing of fuel line (tuberculation) so check flow from r/tank and for any debri inside?
