Refridgerant leaks from the spot where the "low pressure" tube's flange sits atop some sort of AC housing. is there a gasket in there that can be replaced?

Refridgerant leaks from the flange that connects the low pressure hose to what i assume is the compressor. my question is this, is there a bad gasketthat could be the problem and can i replace it myself?

    Turnsout, subytech was right! it was just an o ring and my shop fixed and recharged it free of cost. sometimes, things just work out for ya!

As long as the leak is coming from between the two mating surfaces and not a cracked or broken weld on the pipe, there is a silicone O-ring that is replaceable. It's just a matter of unbolting the pipe, pulling off the old O-ring, slapping the new one on, and bolting the pipe back on. If you still have refrigerant in the system, you'll obviously need to take it to a repair shop to have the system evacuated. Then after you make the repair you'll have the shop recharge you system. They will probably have to charge you for some extra refrigerant to make up for what was already lost, along w/ the labor for an evac. and recharge. It's recommended to replace the receiver/filter dryer canister whenever the A/C system is opened up to the atmosphere, just a little FYI so you don't thing there tryin to sell you something you don't need. Yes! You can fix it yourself! You can get the parts from the auto parts store or from Subaru and its relatively easy on a car such as these. All of the bits are high enough and right where they can be reached without too much hassle. All I did was google "fix air conditioning in car" and I got a slew of good resources. There is even a guy on video that is fixing an old Subaru wagon (if you can get around the fact that Im pretty sure he's naked: www.articlesbase.com/videos/5min/76361792 ) But there are others who are just as good too! I had to order the low pressure hose and expansion valve and I was able to replace it with a little help from my dad! Good luck!

How to pull a thermostat and where is locateed


Assuming you have the 2.7 liter engine, the thermostat is where the lower radiator hose returns to the engine.

2.7L Engine

  1. Disconnect negative cable.
    CAUTIONDo not remove pressure cap with the system hot and under pressure because serious burns from coolant can occur.
  2. Drain cooling system.
  3. Remove radiator lower hose from thermostat housing.
  4. Remove nuts from heater tube flange studs.
  5. Loosen starter bolt at heater tube bracket.
  6. Pull heater tube out of thermostat housing and position out of the way.
  7. Remove bolt and two studs.
  8. Remove thermostat housing, O-ring and thermostat.
  9. Remove thermostat housing bolts.

To install:
  1. Clean gasket sealing surfaces.
    NOTEInstall thermostat with the bleed valve located at the 12 o'clock position, between tabs on seal.
  2. Install thermostat and seal into thermostat housing .
  3. If removed, install two studs.
  4. Install thermostat, thermostat housing and O-ring and bolt. Tighten attaching bolts to 105 inch lbs.(12 Nm).
  5. Lubricate new heater return tube O-ring with coolant.
  6. Position heater return tube flange over two studs. Install nuts.
  7. Tighten retaining nuts to 53 inch lbs.(6 Nm).
  8. Tighten starter bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (54.3 Nm).
  9. Connect the lower radiator hose to the thermostat housing. Install hose clamps.
  10. Refill cooling system.
  11. Inspect for leaks.
  12. Connect negative cable.

Check this procedure for...
2.7L Engine

    NOTE The OEM thermostat is staked in place at the factory. To ensure proper seating of replacement thermostat, carefully remove the bulged metal from the thermostat housing using a suitable hand held grinder. It is not necessary to restake the replacement thermostat into the thermostat housing.
To install:
  1. Position gasket on thermostat and housing.
  2. Install thermostat housing, gasket and mounting bolts onto block. Tighten attaching bolts to 105 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  3. Install radiator hose.
  4. Install bypass hose.
  5. Connect electrical connectors from engine oil and power steering pressure switches.
  6. Connect negative cable.
  7. Fill cooling system.
  8. Inspect for leaks.
  9. Lower vehicle on hoist.

Looking for a picture of the diagram of where the thermostat is located on my 1998 2.7 liter dodge intrepid PLEASE!!!!!


Hi, I don't have a picture, but trace the big hose from the bottom of the radiator to the engine, and it will be under the housing where the hose connects.

    The OEM thermostat is staked in place at the factory. To ensure proper seating of replacement thermostat, carefully remove the bulged metal from the thermostat housing using a suitable hand held grinder. It is not necessary to restake the replacement thermostat into the thermostat housing.

How do I change the thermostat on a 1999 dodge intrepid 2.7L


The thermostat on the 2.7L and 3.5L engines are located on the lower left side of engine, near the front. The thermostat on both engines are on the inlet side of the water pump.

2.7L Engine

Thermostat housing leaksput sealer new thermstat main housing lea


Simple fix..... Just need to replace the gasket. Go to your local auto parts store and get a new gasket for your year, make, and model of car. Should only be $5 -$8 for the gasket. Take the housing apart, 4 -1/4" bolts, I believe, take them all the way out. Take the housing off, but be careful not to lose the thermostat, as it just sits in there loosely. (You will also lose some fluid from the radiator, so you may want to place a catch-pan underneath the car where the antifreeze will spill). Next, you will have to scrape the old gasket off both sides of the flange using an old putty knife, razor-blade scraper, or even sandpaper. Then just fit the new gasket in so that the bolt holes line up, and bolt the flange back in place. Don't over-tighten the bolts due to they are under quite a bit of heat and pressure and you don't want them to rupture. Good luck.

I own a Cadillac Seville STS, on my dash it reads refridgerant very low , and also it says A.C compresser off. I just refilled my coolant with refridgerant with the r142a and it did not work.The dash still...


You have a leak in the ac system, u will have to have the system leak tested and the leak repaired before adding anymore very expensive R134 refridgerent.

I need to know where the location of the thermostat is on a 1999 chrysler 300m so i can replace


The 2.7L engine lower radiator hose, connects to the thermostat housing.

To Remove:
1.Disconnect the Negative battery cable.
(Engine COLD!)
  1. Drain cooling system.
  2. Remove radiator lower hose from thermostat housing.
  3. Remove nuts from heater tube flange studs.
  4. Loosen starter bolt at heater tube bracket.
  5. Pull heater tube out of thermostat housing and position out of the way.
  6. Remove bolt and two studs.
  7. Remove thermostat housing, O-ring and thermostat.
  8. Remove thermostat housing bolts.
To install:
A.Clean gasket sealing surfaces.
B.Install thermostat with the bleed valve located at the 12 o'clock position, between tabs on seal.
  1. Install thermostat and seal into thermostat housing .
  2. If removed, install two studs.
  3. Install thermostat, thermostat housing and O-ring and bolt. Tighten attaching bolts to 105 inch lbs.(12 Nm).
  4. Lubricate new heater return tube O-ring with coolant.

  5. Remove thermostat housing bolts.
  6. Remove housing, thermostat, and gasket.
