Question about 1997 Ford Taurus
Have you checked the oil level, as a low oil level may cause this problem. Also check the oil level while the motor is running. cause when the motor is not running the oil from the torque converter run back into the sump and can give you a inaccurate reading.
Another cause is a break band or cluch pack slipping from ware.
