2004 Ford F-350 6.0 Turbo Diesel - Severe Hesitation at Take Off

Hesitation at take off, a puff of black smoke then "catches up" and runs great. I've changed all filters. While in neutral or park, rev engine and no black smoke, rpms are normal. Only when under a load does it hesitate and smoke then run great.

Some of these engines have a place to drain water out of the fuel system.. Some fords actually have a stick under the hood that you push or pull That opens a valve on a water collection bowl. It's not labeled usually. It might state where it is in the owners manual under fuel water drainage or something similar.. if that bowl is full it will cause hesitation... If it gets over full it will cause runability problems. Another possibility since you said it's black smoke is one of your injectors is sticking at low rpms and squirting raw fuel into the cylinder till the rpms get up enough to burn that fuel off completely then then the injector works a little better.... Do you notice any missing... Feel something under the hood like the air cleaner housing and make sure the vibration is constant and doesn't have a small sudden shake and the n smoothe... And then a small sudden shake again.
If it does have this shake you can trouble shoot which injectors by with the engine running loosening an injector line and seeing if the engine runs worse or not.. If it runs worse tighten it up and move to the next line till you unscrew one and feel and hear no difference... When you find that one that's the injector with the problem.

Hi my 2006 3.2 blows puffs of un-burnt diesel smoke intermittently after it has been driven in traffic

have the variable vanes in the turbo checked for correct operation
there is an actuator that is vacuum
electrical sensor controlled and the vanes may be sticking at slow engine operations as on traffic
the smoke color indicates incorrect air/fuel ratio and the turbo is a point to investigate

Excessive black smoke puffs out when I take off or try to pick up speed. Is it the turbo or injectors that need replacing

I'm suspecting it is a diesel you are reffering to. Excessive black smoke is due to unburned fuel. You may have an injector issue where one or more is leaking. Very doubtful as to a turbo problem causing this. I would suggest a strong diesel fuel treatment in the fuel be tried first ( possibly several applications ) to see if it helps. Injector replacement is expensive

Turbo problem?

Good chance that a turbo coupling is loose/torn. But, can be as simple as you just need to tighten the clamps on the compressor side outlet piping. Check all of your turbo piping for leaks, I had the same problem. And if I am right then there's should be excessive black smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe.
