Question about 1997 Chevrolet K1500

My timing belt is ever so slightly off on the a/c pulley since the shop recently installed a new power steering pump. Now at 2000 RPM, my truck whines like no other. Also, the power steering comes in and out, usually out when the rpms are sub 1000. Is there a home remedy to get that belt back in line? And why is my PS still messed?

    Turns out, after return to the shop, the new PS pump was defective, explaining the noise, and will be replaced under warranty.  The PS gearbox went out, explaining the mechanical stiffness.  Guess it wasn't the belt afterall?

It is an easy fix with the correct tools and elbow grease. First I would recommend taking it back to the shop that did not correctly place the belt in the first place and explaining the problem. To do it yourself, under the hood should be a diagram of the belt itself and how and where it is going around the a/c and others. Included in this diagram should be the " Tensioner ". When "tightened" the tension releases completely on the belt for you to route the belt correctly and on the pulleys 100%. you will need a 9/16 box end wrench for the tensioner. to reapply the tension on the belt, simply "tighten" it again. I would say your water pump or more likely
your power steering pump,has the pulley on
wrong & is putting side thrust on the belt

If neither -- then the crank pulley has walked out
It has deteriated rubber in the damper

Power steering pump, broken, how to replace


Power Steering Pump - REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

3.0L OHV (2 valve) Engine

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  3. Remove the alternator.
  4. Drain and remove the radiator coolant recovery reservoir.
  5. Position a drain pan under the power steering pump underneath the vehicle. Disconnect the hydraulic pressure and return lines and allow to drain.
  6. Remove the idler pulley from the power steering pump support.
  7. Remove the bracket mounting bolt located under the belt tensioner mounting.
  8. Remove 2 retaining nuts from the bracket mounting studs. Remove both mounting studs, and pull off the power steering pump support with the pump attached.
  9. Clamp the pump support bracket in a suitable vise.
  10. Remove the power steering pump pulley from the pump shaft using Pump Pulley Remover T69L-10300-B, or equivalent. Remove the 3 bolts retaining the power steering pump to the power steering pump support and remove the power steering pump.
To install:
  1. Install the power steering pump to the power steering pump support.
  2. Install the power steering pump pulley using Steering Pump Pulley Replacer T65P-3A733-C, or equivalent; the pulley face must be flush within 0.010 inch (0.25mm) of the pump shaft.
  3. Install the power steering pump/pump support and torque nuts/bolt to 17-24 ft. lbs. (23-32 Nm).
  4. Complete the installation by reversing the removal procedure.
  5. Fill the power steering reservoir with power steering fluid.
  6. Connect the negative battery cable.
  7. Run the engine and check for leaks and proper operation. Bleed the power steering system if needed.

How do i change a power steering pump on a 2004 ford f 150 5.4 4x4

Follow this steps


The items you will need include basic hand tools, shop rags, gloves, drip pan, fluid suction gun, power steering pump pulley removal tool, power steering pump pulley installation tool, power steering fluid, and a Haynes manual.


Use a suction gun to remove the power steering fluid.


Position a drip pan under the pump and disconnect the high pressure line and fluid return hose. Cap the ends of the lines.


Loosen the serpentine belt and slip it out of the power steering pump pulley. Replace any worn belts at this time.


Remove the bolts and nuts that hold the pump onto the engine.


Remove the pump. Now remove the pulley from the pump. To do this, use a power steering pump pulley removal tool. If you don't have one, you can rent one from Advance Auto Parts.


Remove the nuts to detach the pump from the brackets.


Reattach the bracket to the new pump. Reinstall the pulley.


Bolt the pump back into place. Slip the belt back onto the pulley and retighten. Reattach the high pressure line and return fluid hose.


Now fill the power steering fluid reservoir until it reaches to the proper level. Now start the vehicle. Recheck the fluid and add if necessary. Turn the wheels left and right a couple of times. So that's it, you are done. Test the vehicle to make sure it functions properly.

Removal
  1. Disconnect the power steering return hose (3A713) at the pump and drain fluid.
  1. Remove the power steering pressure hose (3A719) by unscrewing connector from the pump.
  1. On the Aerostar 3.0L V-6 engine (6007), loosen the drive belt tensioner (6B209) and adjustment bolts.

  1. NOTE: If the drive belt requires servicing, refer to Section 03-05 .

    Remove the drive belt from the power steering pump pulley.
  1. Remove the oil dipstick tube.
  1. Remove the power steering pump support (3C511).
  1. Install Steering Pump Pulley Remover T69L-10300-B on the pulley.
  1. NOTE: Do not apply pressure on the power steering pump rotor shaft (3B559). Pressure will damage internal thrust areas of the power steering pump (3A674).

    While holding the remover tool nut stationary with a wrench, rotate the inner spindle of the remover tool clockwise until the pulley is pulled off the power steering pump rotor shaft.
  1. Remove the bolts attaching the power steering pump to the A/C compressor mounting bracket (2882).
Installation
  1. Install the power steering pump on the A/C compressor mounting bracket. Install and tighten attaching bolts to 41-61 Nm (30-45 lb-ft). On 4.0L engine, tighten to 47-64 Nm (35-47 lb-ft).
  1. Position the support on the A/C compressor mounting bracket. Install mounting bolts and tighten to 47-64 Nm (35-47 lb-ft).
  1. NOTE: Fore/aft location of power steering pump pulley on power steering pump rotor shaft is critical. Incorrect belt alignment may cause drive belt squeal or chirp. Make sure pull-off groove on power steering pump pulley is facing front and flush with end of shaft ± 0.254mm (± 0.010 inch).

    Install the Steering Pump Pulley Replacer T65P-3A733-C and install the power steering pump pulley.
  1. Install the drive belt on the power steering pump pulley.
  1. On the 2.3L I-4, Ranger 3.0L V-6, and 4.0L V-6 engines, position and rotate drive belt on engine. While lifting drive belt tensioner in a counterclockwise direction (clockwise on Ranger 3.0L V-6), slide drive belt under drive belt tensioner and lower drive belt tensioner to drive belt.
    On Aerostar 3.0L V-6 engine, position the belt idler pulley (8678) assembly to give the drive belt the tension specified. Refer to belt tension check in Section 03-05 . Tighten the drive belt tensioner and adjustment bolts to 47-64 Nm (35-47 lb-ft).
  1. Install the power steering pump support, if removed.
  1. Install the oil dipstick tube.
  1. Install the pressure hose tube nut and new Teflon® wagner into power steering pump valve outlet fitting (3D654) and tighten to 41-54 Nm (30-40 lb-ft).
  1. Connect the power steering return hose to the power steering pump, and reposition the clamp.
  1. Fill the power steering oil reservoir (3A697) with Premium Power Steering Fluid E6AZ-19582-AA or equivalent fluid meeting specification ESW-M2C33-F. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel (3600) from left to right without hitting stops to remove air from the system.
  1. Check for leaks and recheck the fluid level. Add fluid if necessary to proper level as specified in Section 11-00 .

Stiff turning


you could be low on pwer steering fluid. CV joints won't affect steering. That is for powering the wheels.

Very important. Make sure shop did not overtighten a/c belt. If they did, you could be in danger of breaking your crankshaft snout. It may be a good idea to check that.

Also, did they tighten the power steering belt correctly?

  1. The tension for the water pump and power steering drive belt should measure 603-691 N (135-155 lbs) for a new drive belt, 495-583 N (110-130 lbs) for a used drive belt. The limit for drive belt tension is 196 N (44 lbs).
    1. Adjust the water pump and power steering drive belt tension as follows:
    2. Raise and support the vehicle.
    3. Remove the RH front fender splash shield (16102).
    4. Loosen the water pump and power steering pump drive belt idler pulley locknut.
    5. Tighten the drive belt tension by turning the water pump and power steering pump drive belt idler pulley adjustment bolt counterclockwise.
      1. Tighten the water pump and power steering pump drive belt idler pulley locknut to 33-37 Nm (24-28 lb-ft).
      1. Install the RH front fender splash shield.
      Deflection Adjustment
      1. NOTE: If the drive belt has been in service for some time, it should be inspected before adjustment. A drive belt that is severely glazed, frayed, cracked, or contaminated with oil must be replaced. Minor cracks in the back of the drive belt are acceptable as long as no large pieces are missing.

        Apply 98 N (22 lbs) of pressure to the drive belt at a point midway between the power steering pump pulley and the water pump pulley.
        1. NOTE: Always check the drive belt deflection when the engine is cold, or has been stopped for at least 30 minutes. A drive belt is considered new if it has been used on a running engine for less than five minutes.

          The drive belt deflection should measure 8-10mm (0.31-0.39 inch) for a new drive belt or 10-12mm (0.39-0.47 inch) for a used drive belt . The limit of deflection is 16.0mm (0.63 inch).
        1. If the drive belt deflection is not as specified, adjust the water pump and power steering pump drive belt tension. Refer to the procedure in this section.
