You can always open the trunk and have someone small enough crawl through the trunk... as long as they are old enough to know how to unlock the door once inside (just pull on the door handle).
The key should work in the driver's door though... not sure why it won't.

on your remote there is a plastic key inside it. find the silver button on the side of the remote. press and hold it as you pull on the key ring. the key will pop out. There is a tiny slot under the driver side door handle on the right as you're looking at it. stick the key into it and pop the plastic cover off the handle. voila!! you've found the key hole in the door. now just stick in the key and turn. magic!!!

unlock with key and hold key over for 30 secs(windows may go down)then lock with key and hold over for 30 secs(windows may go up)then press remote unlock button and hold for 30 secs,you have just reset system...the closer you have to get to the car for the remote to work the lower the battery power.sensor on top of dash(little black dimple)rarely,if at all, goes wrong.....

No. VW has made it nearly impossible to solve any key-related problems without a costly visit to the dealership. Battery must be replaced, and I assure you. the dealership will advise you that the ONLY place that you can find that particular battery is from the dealership. They like it that way.
