Question about Hyundai Accent

My rear brakes are knocking when I am trying to stop. I just had the drums and the springs replaced over the weekend and the noise didn't start until after the new stuff was put on.

    Exactly what I have on a 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan with the rear drum brakes just replaced along with new hardware kits all around (that was supposed to fix the knock). It is only coming from one side and only when applying the brakes. What are the odds that one of the new drums is slightly out of round? I am not sure what else to do. I even put on new wheel cylinders.

My suburban kind of rattles/knocks in the rear end when driving over quick sudden bumps like a gravel road.


Rust and bushing wear are problems with the rear suspension components in these vehicles. You did not mention the year, but you probably have leaf springs back there. You need to check the shackle bolts and the leaf retaining rivets for loose or missing parts. If you have coil springs, check the lower spring bumpers - one or both my be badly worn or gone. And yes, any bushings may need replacing.
As far as the brakes are concerned, that is probably the noise you hear. You need to have the shoes replaced right away, and since they are that badly worn, the drums will need to be turned or probably replaced.

Drum brakes causing intermittent grinding noise


Sounds like one of the springs that hold the rear brakes in place broke. Jack her up, pop off the tire, remove the drum and take a look. If you need to see what a good one looks like, look on the other side.

This is not a very common problem, but I saw it last year on a 69 chevelle.

Noise from rear brakes but pads and rotors are


Did you check the emergency brakes? The rear rotors have drum brakes on the inside. You may have to loosen the adjustment to get the rotor off.

They will try your patience. Even brake shops miss the diagnosis. Hard to very hard to replace the mounting springs.

Knocking/thumping noise in rear end while breaking


I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM I'VE BEEN DOING A LOT OF RESEARCH ON IT AND I THINK ITS GONNA BE THE BUSHINGS IN THE REAR KNUCKLE ASSEMBLY AND YOUR HAVE TO CHANGE THE WHOLE ASSEMBLY. I HAVEN'T TRIED IT YET BUT IF YOU CHECK BACK IN A COUPLE DAYS I WILL LET YOU KNOW

Removal Procedure Tools RequiredJ 38400
Caution: Keep fingers away from rear brake shoe springs to prevent fingers from being pinched between spring and shoe web or spring and backing plate.
  1. Remove the brake drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement

    Notice: Do not over stretch the adjuster spring. Damage can occur if the spring is over stretched.
  3. Use the J 38400 in order remove the adjuster spring (1). Disengage the adjuster spring loop from the tab on the adjuster actuator.
  4. 2.1. Remove the loop end of the adjuster spring from the adjuster actuator. 2.2. Remove the straight end of the adjuster spring from the secondary brake shoe.

  5. Use the J 38400 in order to spread the brake shoes apart.
  6. Remove the adjuster.

Rear brakes


The rear brake drums are out of round and need to be machined or replaced. The shoes should then be adjusted to meet the drum with a slight drag. This should solve your problem

i think your aware of how to change the brakes if im right and your problem is the rusted drum doesnt want to come off the only way to get the old drum off is to remove adjuster plug from behind drum dustshield and adjust the shoes so that there not even close to the braking area of the drum then try and wiggle the drum off of the assembly if it is not coming off then you need to use the old nylon hammer on the drum and i mean you must hit the drum from side to side trying by hand to wiggle the drum off its a tight fit and you need to strike the drum on the face not on the fins not wanting to damage with persistance and care and patience you will eventually be able to remove the drum to service brakes take care and good luck with it
