Gear shift light will not light up

Car will only go in 3rd gear and reverse, when bringing to either one (automatic) the engine hits transmission pretty hard. Also lights on dash for gears all on for a bit then all off. Does not show if it's on N, D, P, etc. ASR light on (try pressing it to turn off on dash no use) When putting key in on position dashboard says AIRBAG FAILURE. From time to time oil pressure message comes on and instantly followed by STOP message.

I would have the ecm checked or make sure all grounds are good and not corroded

That is your brake light switch that need to be replaced. Ask your dealer if he can do an "N4" and it might be free.

SOURCE: 2001 vw cabrio automatic transmission

I'm dealing with the same car. I just had the transmission completely overhauled. Very$$$. The mechanic told me that it's common for cabrio's to develop this problem between 80,000 and 100,000 miles, mine happened around 95,000 miles. Knowing what I know now, I would have sold it.

SOURCE: Can't shift when car is cold

I have a1998 VW jetta vr6 glx with the same problem and living in New England it gets really cold, but i did some research and it worked.... With the car in neutral and the E-break engaged, reach down and pull up on the clutch pedal, thus "resetting" the tension in the cable, it will be a bit higher on your foot and the release/engage point will be higher as well but i did this when it was 10*f and i could not get any gear, after pulling up on the clutch, shifts with ease,,,, such a relief

This question should be deleted. Aside from the obvious illiteration, there is nothing in the known universe that could be stuck in an oil filter that could cause the transmission to fail, nor could the oil pressure. What most likely happened is someone did a neutral drop and blew a solenoid in the transmission. Rebuild/replace transmission, or drive without it.

Try carefully topping up the brake fluid, this can happen when the level falls as the pads wear down especially when cornering

Find a local trusted transmission repair shop, they will do a preliminary diagnosis in most cases for little or no cost if you give them the job of repairing the transmission, which I think needs to be overhauled judging by the symptoms it is presenting.

Shifting problem, automatic transmission
Does your check engine light come on when this happens? It's probably when your tranny goes into limp home mode. You should have 1st gear ( only if you shift it there manually) 3rd and reverse. You are probably experiencing the 3rd gear thing and are probably burning up all of the clutches when you accelerate and should probably take it into the shop before something worse happens. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
