Disconnect the negative ground cable. This should just reset the system and in some cases will not clear the codes in the system.

2006 Highlander - Check engine light and VSC light on. What does this mean?

you will need to hook up a scan tool, I know many parts stores will loan you one or let you use it in the parking lot, VSC could have something to do with a wheel mounted speed sensor, did you hit something? any noises, try this and see if it goes away
    • 1 Shut off the vehicle's engine and apply the parking brake to protect yourself while working on the vehicle.
    • 2 Open the vehicle's hood and examine the engine compartment. Locate the air filter box mounted to the left of the engine. The air filter box features a black exterior, square in shape, and a large ribbed intake hose.
    • 3 Check all of the small black vacuum lines surrounding the air filter box. Reconnect any disconnected or loose vacuum lines you find.
    • 4 Start the engine and drive the vehicle to clear the "VSC" warning light displayed on the dashboard. If the VSC light fails to go out after driving the vehicle normally, proceed to the next step.
    • 5 Park the vehicle, turn off the engine and set the parking brake. Open the vehicle's hood and disconnect the battery's negative cable for 15 seconds, using an appropriate size socket. Disconnecting the negative battery cable will reset the vehicle's computer and clear the "VSC" warning.

Windstar engine will not shut off after removing key from ignition

I think you need to study about:

Closed or Completed Circuits
Open Circuits
Short Circuits

NO ONE has any idea what a short circuit is

If you had one, you would have a blown
fuse or burned up something

Car turns all the way off while driving, including headlights, starts right back up, but drives like it has bad gas, (surges), but that's not the problem

Your right, bad gas may not be the problem, but have you checked and changed the fuel filter and possibly the fuel pump? Typically if your fuel filter is going out, the cars' computer will default out and tell the engine to shut down.

Check engine light on . checked gas cap fluid

You erased code when you disconnected battery, so you'll have to wait and see if light comes on again. If it doesn't, no worries, if it does, stop into a Pep Boys, Autozone, or similar autoparts store and ask for the free trouble code scan, and write them down. If fix isn't obvious from code read out, get back to us with code(s) and we'll help guide you from there. Much cheaper and easier doing it that way.

I disconnected my + battery cable to turn off my check engine light--instead several other warning lights came on- how do I turn off my dashboard lights?

no! here listen, disconnect the - battery cable and then turn on your switch key, not to start the car, and then go back to the battery and touch on and off the cable you disconnect into the - of the battery, just ljke you trying to make a spark but don't connect it yet, and then turn off the key again and do it three time touching on and off to create spark, and the connect the cable now and start the car, leave it on the car in 15 min. see how it goes, ok

Have a 2001 Audi TT quattro turbo. Ran fine and had a check engine light on i thought is was from a low quality fuel that i had in it. So i decided to just disconnect the negative battery cable for a while...

disconnecting the battery in a 2001 does nothing for the light reset.. that only works on 95 and older units.....sounds as though you triggered the security can try to shut all doors and with key lock and unlock then lock and unlock the drivers doors attempting to reset the alarm... if no good stick key in ignition and turn to the run position let stand for 10 minutes. then turn key off. exit car unlock and lock door again then try to start if no good let me know
