I have the same problem with my 97 tercel squealing in 1st and 2nd gear, but once I go to 3rd and higher the squealing stops. Does this sound like more than a belt problem?

Squealing, like a belt? I've found that the alternator belt has to be super-tight or else it squeals. It's a pain in the **** to torque the alternator sideways enough to tighten the belt.

If it is a belt, you could also buy some belt dressing spray and see if that helps. It's pretty cheap stuff per can.

Toyota Tercel belts are squealing

I have been having the same problem with the alternator belt squealing, most noticeably, when using the heater fan , accelerating, turning the headlights on. I have a 1997 Toyota Tercel CE 1.5L 4cyl with no A/C. I just tightened the belt tight enough that there is no give to the belt and it does not squeal anymore.

I also used a Goodyear Gatorback from Napa belt which seems to be nice and quiet when tight enough.

97 toyota tercel cigarette lighter does not work. fuses look to be in good shape. any ideas?

get you a test light. pull the plug out where you can see the leads. the red one in the center is your hot wire. touch it with the tester, the other wire on your tester usually with a clip to a good solid gound. if the light doesnt come on then reverse test leads and try again. by doing this you will determine if its a ground wire not getting to the cig lighter or is something is wrong with your hotwire.
