you use the wrong terms and it is confusing
cranking is when the engine is turning over of the starter and running is when it fires up and goes
now if it is cranking very slow then it is a battery problem
if it is cranking and not firing or running then it is still a battery problem
you sat the battery is low so you jumped the battery but it still will not start and run
The first thing to do is to have a load test done on the battery to check for a dead cell as the starter is drawing too much current and there is not enough power to run the ignition system
Take your battery somewhere and have it load tested. If it tests good it has to be your starter. The alternator has to be working or you would have a dead battery all the time. Unless you are putting it on a charger or jumping it.
If the car doesn't start with a jump you might have a bad alternator. The alternator supplies voltage to the car once the engine is running. If the battery is dead, and the alternator isn't putting out sufficient voltage, the engine cannot run. Then again sometimes a car with an extremely dead or internally shorted battery WON'T start with a jump. Replace the battery and try again.
Okay, what you seem to be saying is the battery does not turn over the engine and the battery smokes when you jump it to start it. But the lights and radio and everything works except the car will not turn over by itself. The battery smokes because either the battery has a short in it, it smokes because the starter is dragging, and/or the jump wires are not hooked up red to red and black to black. You need to have the battery and starter checked. If the car runs take it to an autoparts place to test. Or if it won't run take out the battery have it tested and if it is good, then take out the starter to test it.
