Question about 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Jeep Hesitates when I step on the gas

My 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee hestitates when I step on the gas, I am pressing the gas petal all the way down and it will only go about 2 or 3 mph. It then starts back fireing and takes off. I have had this problem for almost two months and have brought it to two repair shops that both tell me until the check engine light comes on they can not tell what the problem is. Have recently had a a tune up new spark plugs fuel filter. My jeep is getting worse every time I drive it , however still no check engine light. Any advise you can give me would be fabulous.
Thank You
Denise

There are individual tests that can be done on each component. If something shows up as "out of range" or close to being out, I would consider it as a potential problem, At this point without being able to actually work on it, I would begin by looking at the throttle position sensor, map sensor and the egr valve (if it has one). I fail to understand how any shop can permit a customer to drive a vehicle in obvious distress and "wait for the light to come on". Before changing sensors, I'd change shops and find someone who cares!!!!
Good luck, and post back when it's fixed, I'd like to know what it turns out to be!!!

Cherokee will not start until i hold down on the gas as soon as i take foot off it dies immediatly

Might have to reset the codes on the computer. Take the + battery cable off the battery and reconnect it afer 5 minutes. Next try to start the engine without holding the gas petal down, it should start and run rought till the computer resets itself. If engine stops, restart the engine and hold the gas petal down and give it enought gas so it will run smooth, it may take 5 minutes or so for it to smooth out and run at idle speed. If this did not fix the problem, check for a vaccum hose that may be off some where on the engine

2000 Jeep Cherokee suddenly looses traction

Sounds like the transmission is slipping. Check the transmission fluid level and top off as needed. If the problem is not severe, an additive such as Lucas transmission additive may help.

Jeep hesitates when I step on the gas

How long has it been since you had the filter & fluid changed? A partially stopped up filter can cause what you describe. However, so can worn parts inside the transmission. What you are experiencing is a clue to a problem that may get worse and more expensive to repair the longer it goes untreated.

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee stalls when brakes are applied

My 2000 Grand Cherokee had the same problem, without all the sputtering, it would just die approaching a stop. We could only keep it running by slightly pushing down on the gas petal when coming to a stop. I replaced the Throttle Position Sensor, but that didn't change anything. A new mechanic I found replaced the Idle Air Control Valve, and we've had no problems in a week.
