Does it happen with your foot on or off of the brake? Does it do it in forward and in reverse? If it is more in forward it could possibly be dragging parking brakes it is common if they are not normally used. Do you normally use you parking brake? If not is it possible that some one recently used it?

It could be your brakes. Jack up the car, put on safety stands, block front wheels at front and back of tires, put Jeep in neutral, try to spin rear wheels, listen for any rubbing, dragging noise. It could either be brakes not releasing (feel the center of the wheel after driving, is it hot?), or a brake component loose and floating around inside the drum. 'Check this 1st, let me know what you find, then we can continue if necessary.

Switching back 4WD to 2WD - 1998 Jeep Cherokee 4L Limited Petrol

With any 4WD like this, always move a few feet in the opposite direction when disengaging. If you were moving fwd in 4wd, switch to 2wd, back up a few feet, then go fwd.
