Question about 1998 Chrysler Town & Country

2 Answers

1998 chrysler town & country 3.8l- how do i get the alternator mounting bracket off so i can replace the alternator? the current alternator's bearing froze, broke belt, can't drive to a repair shop, alternator is unbolted from the bracket but not enough clearance to remove without removing the mounting bracket. all visible bolts (3) have been removed from the bracket and still will not separate from the block. tensioner appears to be "pinching" the plate to the block. gentle use of crow bar flexes the bracket but still firmly attached. are there other bolts out of sight?

most likely you would have to lift the engine from the bottom to take pressure of the bracket also removing that side motor mount.Make sure u use a board so you wont damage the oil pan.

You dont have to take it off. remove the 2 15mm bolts and pry the bracket sideways w/ a prybar. This shortens your time. You most likely have a 90amp alternator so it should be small enough to slide through.

Replace serpentine belt 96 town & country, also does the tensioner ever freeze up?

Any bearing mounted pulley can "freeze" if a bearing wears out. The most common result it it can burn up a belt which will break with the engine running. When it snaps it MIGHT damage anything it hits - usually with no bad results. ANY bad pulley (or pulley driven part such as the alternator) needs to be replaced before a new belt is installed or the new belt will be damaged from the friction. To replace the serpentine belt - there should be a belt routing decal on the underside of the hood or on the shroud covering the radiator.

It is located on the back side of the underdash fuse box (junction block). You remove the lower steering column cover and knee blocker reinforcement. Then remove two plugs from the bottom of the BCM.
Remove the bolts holding the junction block to dash panel mounting bracket. Remove the junction block from the bracket. Remove screws holding the BCM to the junction block. Slide the BCM downward to disengage guide studs on jb from channels on BCM mounting bracket

Replace alternator

Disconnect the battery, neg. post first. Remove the serp. belt., remove the alternator mounting bolts and wiring. Remove the alternator bracket, then remove the alternator. It'll almost feel like you have to be a contortionist on parts of this job. Hope this helps.
