2003 Chevy S10 had fuel pump replaced. When fuel gauge shows slightly below half, the gauge falls to empty and low fuel lights blinks. What could be causing this?

hi,

sounds like the sending unit rheostat(sending unit) has a bad contact or break in the resistance wire. inside the tank theres a float attached to an arm that goes to a small rheostat, like a volume control on a stereo. the rheostat is sending a scratchy signal or no signal to the computer and your getting these readings. that part is inside the gas tank, the part usually comes integrated with the fuel pump. the gas tank has to be lowered to fix it.

This sounds like the fuel level sensor in the gas tank is going bad, or there is a bad ground at the tank. A technician using a scan tool can monitor the actual fuel level data to verify.
Another possibility is a bad stepper motor in the instrument panel, each gauge had a stepper motor to drive the needle.

It started sputtering and cutting out - moving very slow. the "service engine soon" light came on. could it be a gas line problem? I've had this from new and never have had an issue w/it.

Your guess is good, did you recently use e-85?
Other possibility water (condensation) in your gas line.
You could throw a can of "Heat" in your gas tank provided you know you haven't recently put in gas that is high in ethanol.

If it is bad gasoline, refill your tank when you get down to half a tank.
If the engine light goes out shortly after that (and the car runs smoother) you've solved your problem.

Gas meter isn't working

The gas tanks sending unit is bad, replace it, you may be able to gain access to it through a panel in the trunk or under the back seat.

2001 chevy silverado 4.8 gas gauge not working properly

Fairly common problem with GM vehicles. The sending unit in your tank has a small circuit board that an arm is attached to which moves up and down according to your fuel level. This circuit board and arm are not making good contact. Unfortunately the only good solution is to replace this part.

Gas gauge malfunction and engine light stays on

This is a common problem with Malibu's. It is due to cheap metal in the fuel gage that corrodes. Chevrolet knows about this but they refuse to issue a fix. The check engine light staying on and the faulty fuel gage are related. This is a defect and they need to recall this part! Raise hell with the dealership!

small gas engines 101. gas+air+compression+spark=vrrrrrrroooooommmm
i doubt its a fuse. make sure all cylinder have good spark. try and run some seafoam through the gas tank and i would look at the timing - im not sure how you know the timing didnt skip but that sounds like your problem.
