Audi A 8, 4.2 1998 I live in Cabo San Lucas Mexico. No dealers within 600 miles. Start car and cannot shift out of park. Turn off engine and remove key the shifter moves from park to D, N, R easley. Put key back in ignition in off position with engine off and shifter moves to D, N, R.! turn key on with or with out starting engine on and shifter locks. Bought recall kit because of tranny shifter lock problem, that is supposed to stop the car from jumping out of park and rolling. Installed kit which included a new part that locks the old adjustable cable lock with a fixed locking mechanism. It did not fix my original problem of shifting out of park after starting. Any help with my problem? Could there be a senser in the key lock that has a faulty electronic sensor?
Sounds like a brake pedal interlock problem. Normally the brake pedal must be depressed to shift gear selector.
Park is release by a small solenoid, the solenoid is powered up by the brake light circuit, so if the brake lights don't work due to a bad switch or wiring issue at the switch park will no release. If the brake lights do work then the wiring to the solenoid may be defective or the solenoid is sticking. Every car I have ever worked on has a bypass for the park lock, check your owner's manual for information on bypassing the lock out when this type of problem occurs.

My daughter drives a Suzuki, my solution to her is: while the gear shift lever is in park, lightly put pressure on the gear shift lever, through the park position and while pressing the gear shift towards park light rock left to right while trying to remove the key.
The interlock between the transmission and the ignition switch needs to be adjusted/ repaired or replaced.

ok what breaks on most of these shift interlock shifter ***. is where the interlock cable attaches to the shifter assy. chrysler has the same prob. cheap stuff. no i don't think you can fix it as when it was new it already was junk. call a junk yard or try to get one off ebay. and yes they are very easy to replace. goodluck

jlcoffell1: From your description, it sounds as though there has been a power source supplied which is not suppose to be present all the time. If someone over rode the interlock, they may have supplied power to the shift solenoid so that it would be the same as though you were applying the brake. It could be as simple as, who ever bypassed the system, picked the power source from the ignition circuit from that control unit. The ignition circuit is a green wire. It goes hot when the ignition switch is turned on. You would look for it to be jumped some how to either the same side of the control unit as the green wire going in, but it would be tied in with a red/green wire. If they carried it to the other side of the control unit, it would tie into the Blue/orange wire.
This is where I would look first.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Good hunting.
Let me know if you need more help.
SOURCE: 94 honda accord ''D4'' gear shift shift selector blinks
Theres a transmission cooling sensor and somtimes the wire comes loose from other repairs being done around it. or its just out. its on the left side sitting on the tranny. THATS WHY your d4 light is blinking
SOURCE: shift handle moves freely with out shifting trans
The shifter works off a shift cable which is connected to the transmission. The connection of this cable to the transmission is on the drivers side looking straight up were you can see it. The other end connects to the inner part of the shifting mechanisum where you shift
You can only get a replacement at any General Motos dealerships parts department
