A camshaft actuator stuck in the full actuation position may cause the engine to crank but not start.
The camshaft position (CMP) actuator system is an electro-hydraulic operated device used for a variety of engine performance and operational enhancements. These enhancements include lower emission output through exhaust gas dilution of the intake charge in the combustion chamber, a broader engine torque range, and improved fuel economy. The CMP actuator system accomplishes this by changing the angle or timing of the camshaft relative to the crankshaft position. The CMP actuator simply allows earlier or later intake and exhaust valve opening during the four stroke engine cycle. The CMP actuator cannot vary the duration of valve opening, or the valve lift.
During engine OFF, engine idling conditions, and engine shutdown, the camshaft actuator is held in the park position. Internal to the CMP actuator assembly is a return spring and a locking pin. During non-phasing modes of the camshaft, the return spring rotates the camshaft back to the park position, and the locking pin retains the CMP actuator sprocket to the camshaft. The park position for the CMP actuator and camshaft is 8.5 degrees before top dead center (BTDC), which is equal to 17 crankshaft degrees BTDC. The engine control module (ECM) can only command the CMP actuator to retard the valve timing from the park position, or advance the valve timing back to the park position. The total range of valve timing authority is approximately 20 degrees of camshaft rotation, which is equal to 40 degrees of crankshaft rotation.

How to reset timeing on a 1991 chevy lumina 3.1


Timing is not resettable by the user, as the computer controls this based on knock or no knock conditions which will advance or ****** ignition timing for optimum performance.

The valve timing is something that is set when installing the timing chain:

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the timing chain front cover assembly, as outlined earlier in this section.
  3. Rotate the crankshaft until the timing marks on the crankshaft sprocket and camshaft sprocket locator hole are aligned to the marks on the engine block or timing chain dampener. This is the No. 1 piston at TDC (No. 4 firing position).
  4. Unfasten the camshaft sprocket retaining bolt/screw, then remove the camshaft sprocket and the timing chain. NOTE: If the camshaft sprocket does not come off easily, a light blow on the lower edge of the sprocket with a rubber mallet should loosen the sprocket.
  5. Remove the crankshaft sprocket using tool J 23444-A or equivalent puller.
  6. If necessary, remove the timing chain dampener retaining bolts, then remove the dampener. To install:
  7. Install the crankshaft sprocket using tool J 38612 until it the sprocket is fully seated on the flange of the crankshaft nose. Apply a coat of Molykote® or equivalent, to the sprocket thrust surface.
  8. Hold the camshaft sprocket with the chain hanging down, and align the marks on the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets.
  9. If removed, install the timing chain damper to the engine block.
  10. Align the dowel in the camshaft with the dowel hole in the camshaft sprocket. Install the camshaft sprocket and chain, use the camshaft sprocket bolts to draw the sprocket on to the camshaft. Tighten the sprocket bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
  11. Lubricate the timing chain with engine oil.
  12. Install the front cover assembly, as outlined earlier in this section.
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.

    Cylinder head bolt tightening sequence - 1993-97

  2. Remove the head from the engine. If prying is necessary, use a protected blade; take great care not to damage the mating surfaces of the head and block.

  3. Clean the head and block of all gasket material. Take great care not to gouge or scratch the mating surfaces.

To install:

  1. Place a new gasket on the cylinder block. Make sure it is positioned correctly. Install the cylinder head in position.

  2. Lightly coat the head bolt threads and plate washers with engine oil. Install the bolts in the head.

  3. Uniformly tighten the head bolts in several passes in sequence, to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).

  4. Mark the front of each bolt with a dot of paint. Following the correct order, tighten each bolt an additional 90 degrees. When complete, all the paint marks should face to the side of the engine.

  5. Again following the correct order, tighten the bolts another 90 degrees of rotation. When complete, the paint marks should face the rear of the engine, exactly 180 degrees away from the original starting point. Correct bolt torque is expressed as 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm) + 90° + 90°.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
SOHC Engine See Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the timing chain front cover.

During timing chain and sprocket removal, position the crankshaft 90 degrees past Top Dead Center (TDC), to make sure the pistons will not contact the valves upon assembly.
  1. Carefully rotate the crankshaft clockwise so the timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket and keyway align with the main bearing cap split line (90 degrees past TDC).
  2. Remove bolts, then remove the timing guides and tensioner.
  3. Remove the camshaft sprocket bolt, using a 7 / 8 in. (21mm) wrench to hold the camshaft. Then remove the timing chain and camshaft sprocket. Remove the crankshaft sprocket, if necessary.

To install:
  1. Inspect the chain for wear and damage. Check the inside diameter of the chain, it should be no more than 16.77 in. (426mm). Inspect the chain guides for wear or cracks and the timing sprockets for teeth or key wear. Replace components as necessary.
  2. Verify that the crankshaft is positioned 90 degrees clockwise past TDC from the keyway (keyway at 3 o'clock).
  3. Bring the camshaft up to No. 1 TDC by loosely installing the sprocket and rotating the sprocket until the timing pin can be inserted. The camshaft contains wrench flats to assist in turning the shaft. The dowel pin should be at 12 o'clock when the camshaft is at TDC and a timing pin ( 3 / 16 in. drill bit) should then install at about the 8 o'clock position.
  4. If removed, install the crankshaft sprocket, then rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise 90 degrees up to No. 1 TDC (keyway at 12 o'clock).
  5. Position the chain under the crankshaft sprocket and over the camshaft sprocket. If necessary remove the camshaft sprocket, then slide the camshaft sprocket into position with the chain already engaged. The timing chain should be positioned so that one silver link plate aligns with the reference mark on the camshaft sprocket and the other aligns with the downward tooth (at the 6 o'clock position) on the crankshaft sprocket. The letters FRT on the camshaft sprocket must face forward, away from the cylinder head and excess chain slack should be located on the tensioner side of the block.
  6. Temporarily install the timing pin to verify proper alignment of the camshaft and sprocket, then install and tighten the sprocket bolt to 75 ft. lbs. (102 Nm). Again, use a wrench on the camshaft flats to hold the shaft in position while tightening the bolt. Do not allow the camshaft retaining bolt to torque against the timing pin or cylinder head damage will result.
  7. Install the chain guides with the words FRONT facing out. Install the fixed guide first and verify the chain is snug against the guide, then install the pivot guide. Tighten the bolts to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm) and verify that the pivot guide moves freely.
  8. Retract the tensioner plunger and pin the ratchet lever using a 1 / 8 in. No. 31 drill bit inserted in the alignment hole at the bottom front of the component. Install the tensioner and tighten the bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm), then remove the drill bit.
  9. Make one final check to verify all components are properly timed, then remove all timing pins.
  10. Install the timing chain front cover.
  11. Connect the negative battery cable, start the engine and check for leaks.

DOHC Engine

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the timing chain front cover.
    NOTE: During timing chain and sprocket removal, position the
    crankshaft 90 degrees past Top Dead Center (TDC) to make sure the pistons will
    not contact the valves upon assembly.



  3. Carefully rotate the crankshaft clockwise so the timing mark on the
    crankshaft sprocket and keyway align with the main bearing cap split line.
  4. Remove the bolts, then remove the timing guides and tensioner.
  5. Remove the camshaft sprocket bolts, using a 7?8 in. (21mm) wrench
    to hold the camshaft. Then remove the timing chain and camshaft sprocket. Remove
    the crankshaft sprocket, if necessary.
    To install:

  6. Inspect the chain for wear and damage. Check the inside diameter of the
    chain, it should be no more than 23.15 in. (588mm). Inspect the chain guides for
    wear or cracks and the timing sprockets for teeth or key wear. Replace
    components as necessary.
  7. Verify that the crankshaft is positioned 90 degrees clockwise past TDC. The
    crankshaft keyway should be at 3 o'clock aligned with the main bearing cap split
    line to prevent piston and valve damage.
  8. Install the camshaft sprockets, retaining bolts and washers. Make sure the
    letters FRT on the sprockets face forward, away from the cylinder block. Use the
    wrench flats provided on the camshafts to hold the shaft and tighten the bolts
    to 75 ft. lbs. (102 Nm).
  9. Bring the camshafts up to No. 1 TDC by rotating the camshafts and sprocket
    until the dowel pins are at 12 o'clock. Install a 1?6 in. drill bit
    into the hole in the sprocket about 9 o'clock.
  10. If removed, install the crankshaft sprocket, then rotate the crankshaft
    counterclockwise 90 degree up to No. 1 TDC (keyway and sprocket timing mark at
    12 o'clock, in alignment with the block timing mark).
  11. Position the timing chain under the crankshaft sprocket and over the
    camshaft sprockets so 2 silver link plates align with the reference marks on the
    camshaft sprockets and another 2 plates align with the downward tooth (at 6
    o'clock position) on the crankshaft sprocket. Excess chain slack should be
    located on the tensioner side of the cylinder block.
  12. Verify that the crankshaft reference mark aligns with the cylinder block
    mark at 12 o'clock and that the timing pins are installed in the holes at about
    the 9 o'clock position. Remove the timing pins from the camshaft sprockets.
  13. Install the timing chain fixed guide to the right of the block face toward
    the water pump. Tighten the bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm) and verify the chain is
    snug against the guide.
  14. Install the pivoting chain guide and check for clearance between the block
    and head. Tighten the bolt to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm) and verify the guide pivots
    freely.
  15. Install the 2 forward camshaft bearing caps and the upper timing chain
    guide, then tighten the retaining bolts to 124 inch lbs. (14 Nm).
  16. Retract the tensioner plunger and pin the ratchet lever using a 1?8 in. (3.18mm) No.
    31 drill bit inserted in the alignment hole at the lower front of the component.
    Install the tensioner and tighten the bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm), then remove
    the drill bit.
  17. Make one final check to verify all components are properly timed, then
    remove all timing pins.
  18. Install the timing chain front cover.
  19. Connect the negative battery cable, start the engine and check for leaks.

Does my 2001 saturn sl 1.9l have a timing belt or chain?


It is a chain and its not the easiest but it could be worse.It is as follows:
1.9L SOHC Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Drain the engine oil.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Negative battery cable
    • Right front wheel and splash shield
    NOTE: Place a 1 in. x 1 in. x 2 in. long block of wood between the torque strut and cradle to ease removal and installation of the torque engine mount.
    • 3 right side upper engine torque axis to front cover nuts and the 2 mount to midrail bracket nuts, allowing the powertrain to rest on the block of wood
    • Drive belt, tensioner and pulley
    • Power steering pump attaching bolts and set the pump to the side with the lines still attached
    • A/C compressor from the bracket and set aside with the lines attached
    • Camshaft cover
    • Using a strap wrench or a piece of wood wedged between the damper spoke and the lower side of the engine front cover, hold the damper and remove the bolt. With a suitable 3-jaw puller and the slots cast into the damper, pull the crankshaft damper/pulley assembly from the crankshaft.
    • Install the special oil seal replacement tool SA9104E, to be sure the front crankshaft timing sprocket is held firmly in place and prevent guide damage. Install with the flat side towards the crankshaft sprocket.
    • Remove or disconnect the following:
      • Front 4 oil pan bolts and cut the seal away from the front cover
      • Front cover bolts and carefully pry the cover away from the cylinder block at the pry location tabs, which are provided. Remove the cover from under the hood or through the wheel well
      • Front cover oil seal from the cover
      NOTE: During timing chain and sprocket removal, position the crankshaft 90 degrees past Top Dead Center (TDC), to be sure the pistons will not contact the valves upon assembly.
    • Carefully rotate the crankshaft clockwise so the timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket and keyway align with the main bearing cap split line (90 degrees past TDC).
    • Remove or disconnect the following:
      • Timing guides and tensioner
      • Camshaft sprocket bolt, using a 7⁄8 in. (21mm) wrench to hold the camshaft. Then, remove the timing chain and camshaft sprocket
      • Crankshaft sprocket
      To install:

    • Install or connect the following:
      • Seat a new front cover oil seal using the installation tool with a press
      • If the engine front cover casting or assembly is replaced, the 3 torque axis mount studs should also be replaced. Torque the new studs to 19 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
1.9L (DOHC) Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. drain the engine oil.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Negative battery cable
    • Right front wheel and splash shield
    NOTE: Place a 1 x 1 x 2 in. (25 x 25 x 51mm) block of wood between the torque strut and cradle to ease removal and installation of the torque engine mount.
    • 3 right side upper engine torque axis to front cover nuts and the 2 mount to midrail bracket nuts, allowing the powertrain to rest on the block of wood
    • Drive belt, tensioner and pulley
    • Power steering pump attaching bolts and set the pump to the side with the lines still attached
    • A/C compressor from the bracket and set it to the side with the lines attached
    • Camshaft cover
  4. Using a strap wrench or a piece of wood wedged between the damper spoke and the lower side of the engine front cover, hold the damper and remove the bolt. With a suitable 3-jaw puller and the slots cast into the damper, pull the crankshaft damper/pulley assembly from the crankshaft.

1993 ford taurus, replaced all starting and charging componets still no spark to plugs. Checked all fuses and all fusible links. Replaced key switch, ignition switch,neutral safty...


The camshaft position sensor sends a signal to the PCM, powertrain control module. The PCM then determines spark plug firing. Could be the camshaft position sensor.

1996 is all I have
Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor 3.0L (2V) Engine
The camshaft position sensor (CMP sensor) (12126):
  • is a single Hall-effect magnetic switch activated by a single vane which is driven by the camshaft (6250).
  • provides camshaft position information which is used by the ignition coil (12029) and the powertrain control module (PCM) (12A650) for fuel synchronization.
3.0L (4V) Engine
The camshaft position sensor (CMP sensor) (6B288) is:
  • a variable reluctance sensor.
  • triggered by the high-point mark on the LH exhaust camshaft sprocket (6256).

SPECIAL SERVICE TOOL(S) REQUIRED Description Tool Number Syncro Positioning Tool T95T-12200-A

Removal
  1. Disconnect battery ground cable. Refer to Section 14-01 .
  1. Disconnect engine control sensor wiring connector from camshaft position sensor.
  1. Remove camshaft position sensor retaining screws and camshaft position sensor from camshaft position sensor housing.
  1. If removing camshaft position sensor housing from the cylinder block (6010), proceed with Removal Step 5. If not removing camshaft position sensor housing, proceed to installation Step 6.
  1. Remove hold-down clamp (bolt and washer assembly).
  1. Remove camshaft position sensor housing from cylinder block.
Installation
  1. sth~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif CAUTION: A special service tool such as Syncro Positioning Tool T95T-12200-A must be obtained prior to installation of the replacement camshaft position sensor. Failure to follow this procedure will result in improper camshaft position sensor alignment. This will result in the fuel system being out of time with the engine, possibly causing engine damage.
    Attach Syncro Positioning Tool T95T-12200-A as follows:
    1. Engage camshaft position sensor housing vane into the radial slot of the tool.
    1. Rotate tool on camshaft position sensor housing until tool boss engages notch in camshaft position sensor housing.
  1. Pre-lubricate synchronizer gear with engine oil meeting Ford specification ESE-M2C123-A prior to assembly.
  1. Install camshaft position sensor housing so that drive gear engagement occurs when arrow on locator tool is pointed approximately 75 degrees counterclockwise from the rear face of the cylinder block. This step will locate camshaft position sensor electrical connector in the pre-removal position.
  1. Roatate Syncro Positioning Tool T95T-12200-A clockwise slightly. This will engage oil pump intermediate shaft. Push downward while adjusting Syncro Positioning Tool T95T-12200-A until the Syncro Gear engages the camshaft gear.
  1. When synchronizer flange is fully seated against block, the installation tool should be facing counterclockwise of engine centerline approximately 33 to 45 degrees.
  1. Install hold-down clamp (washer and bolt) and tighten bolt to 19-30 Nm (14-22 lb-ft).
  1. Remove Syncro Positioning Tool T95T-12200-A.
  1. sth~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif CAUTION: If camshaft position sensor electrical connector is not positioned properly, DO NOT reposition the connector by rotating the camshaft position sensor housing. This will result in the fuel system being out of time with the engine, possibly causing engine damage. Remove the camshaft position sensor housing and repeat installation procedure, beginning with Step 1.
    Install camshaft position sensor and retaining screws. Tighten screws to 1.5-4.0 Nm (13-35 lb-in).
  1. Connect engine control sensor wiring connector to camshaft position sensor.
  1. Connect battery ground cable.

Chevy 400 engine hi-performance timing not running correctly


I had the same problem with a 350. I finally took a wooden dowel about 3/8s in diameter, and put it in #1 plug hole and rotated the engine until it firmly engaged the dowel,them checked the timing marks. The mark on the harmonic balancer was a full 2" from coming up on the O pointer. While the engine was in this position, I timed to #1 and the engine fired right up. The problem was the outer ring of the harmonic balancer had slipped and I was constantly timing to a cylinder that was not TDC. I hope this helps. DEB

svh~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif CAUTION: Prior to removal of the camshaft position sensor (CMP sensor) (12126), set cylinder No.1 to zero degrees top dead center (TDC) of compression stroke. Note the position of the camshaft position sensor electrical connector. The installation procedure requires that the connector be located in the same position.
Removal
  1. Disconnect battery ground cable. Refer to Section 14-01 .
  1. Disconnect engine control sensor wiring connector from camshaft position sensor.
  1. Remove camshaft position sensor retaining screws and camshaft position sensor from camshaft position sensor housing.
  1. If removing camshaft position sensor housing from the cylinder blocks (6010), proceed with Removal Step 5. If not removing camshaft position sensor housing, proceed to installation Step 6.
  1. Remove hold-down clamp (12270) (bolt and washer assembly).
  1. Remove camshaft position sensor housing from cylinder blocks.
Installation
  1. svh~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif CAUTION: A special service tool such as Syncro Positioning Tool T95T-12200-A must be used to position the synchronizer assembly prior to installation of the camshaft position sensor. Failure to follow this procedure will result in improper camshaft position sensor alignment. This will result in the fuel system being out of time with the engine, possibly causing engine damage.
    Attach Syncro Positioning Tool T95T-12200-A as follows:
    1. Engage camshaft position sensor housing vane into the radial slot of the tool.
    1. Rotate tool on camshaft position sensor housing until tool boss engages notch in camshaft position sensor housing.
  1. Pre-lubricate synchronizer gear with engine oil meeting Ford specification ESE-M2C123-A prior to assembly.
  1. Install camshaft position sensor housing so that drive gear engagement occurs. Locate camshaft position sensor electrical connector in the pre-removal position.
  1. Install hold-down clamp (washer and bolt) and tighten bolt to 19-30 Nm (14-22 lb-ft).

Aftermarket intake, camshaft and either a good set of heads or port/polish what you have. If you go with a cam, go with more adv. duration and duration and .050. I like running a .525 lift, .230 dur. @ .050 and .292 advertised duration. Get a good set of springs and valves. This cam should get your redline around 6200. If you're using this engine on the street, I prefer the Performer RPM with a 1" spacer. This provides plenty of velocity to the heads. If you can find a set of camel hump heads, casting number 041 you'll love those or have your heads ported. I'd run a Edlebrock 1407 carb. with this set up if you're using it on the street. If you're using this engine for strip duty as well, use a single plane intake like a Victor Jr. Professional Products have a nice selection of single plane intakes for a very low price. I've bought one myself and really liked it.
