Question about 1989 Jeep Wrangler

1 Answer

The clutch in my 92 Jeep Wrangler suddenly stopped working.

I recently, 5 days ago, finally got the major oil leak probs in my Jeep fixed. I had been sitting in my garage for about 6 months. When I went to take it for a test run, the clutch was extremely tight and sticking, so we sprayed it pretty well with lubricant. It seemed to be working just fine. I drove it around for a few days, but got in this morning and the clutch totally hit the floor. It has no resistance and is not engaging at all. I checked the fluid and it is totally full. What else should I be looking for?

Thank you so much! That was very informative!

Honestly, I have no idea. I started to get up under the dash and look to see if the pedal had come loose, and it had pressure again. Maybe she was just being bitchy from not being ridden in a while. Kidding. I'm hoping it was just no fluid in the line. (Although, that was the first thing I checked). Either way, I know more about the Jeep and appreciate the help!!! Thanks again!

Checkunder the dash and make sure that the pedal has not torn off the bellcrank. Check the actuator rod as well. It is possible that the master for the clutch has internally failed and is bypassing but usually if this happens it will pump up, but sometimes not. Also, check for leaks...If it just failed, it may not have leaked enough to empty the master yet. There are other items that could have failed, but these are comon. Any questions along the way just ask!!

    What did you find???

Weird...I really hate the ones that "self repair" 'cause you don't know if it will decide to happen again. (Hope not)
    Good luck with it!!!

What if anything will slow or temporarily stop a clutch leak on slave cly of 94 wrangler

Nothing really. I have heard guys using gear oil as a temp fix, provided you're going to replace it in near future. They're not that expensive or difficult to change, be safe friend and change it,

We understand that your problem is: 92 Jeep

This is a typical master cylinder failure. PRE bleed a new m/c and install that.

Will stop leak fix a leak in the clutch slave cylinder on a 92 wranlger 2.5L 5 speed?

No. the pressure is too high and the fluid type is completely different than what is used in stop leak which is used in other hydraulic systems. Your clutch uses the same fluid as the brakes do. DOT3 or DOT4. Adding anything other than that will contaminate and ruin the system.

Get the clutch slave cylinder and master cylinder looked at.One of the 2 has failed. If the pedal goes to the floor or is very loose, this is very likely the cause. Not an expensive fix.Hope this helps

I have a 1989 jeep wrangler. yesterday, after the stick shift felt stiff to shift, the clutch felt suddenly loose. Today, the stick shift stopped moving completely while i was driving. Finally, I was able...

Sounds like you are having a clutch problem. The sudden looseness in the clutch pedal indicates a problem with either the hydralic system, (slave or master or line) leaking or clutch pressure plate going out. Check your clutch fluid resevoir first, if low look for a leak under the vehicle, have a friend push the clutch and get underneath to find leak.

1998 Jeep Wrangler a/c problem

If you still have freon in it you can try a new low pressure switch. You should find it around the oblong tank. You can unplug the switch and jump the plug to see if the clutch engages. Moderation is the key. Put in the correct ounces of Freon and the system should cycle. Too much freon it will cut out-too little it will cut out. You want the pipes to sweat or frost and the compressor to go off and on. Also be sure you put in an oil charge for that new compressor.
