Question about 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

I have a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Larado. I just put a tranny in it and when we went to test drive it, it does not have no power and just sits and sputters. Not sure what to check or where to start? Thanks

Yes the engine light is on. I don't have a scanner to check the codes. I know you can jump accross to get them, but I can't find noone that can tell me how to do it. We have changed plugs & wires, put both cencors new on it for the tranny. This jeep ran fine before we changed the tranny.

Check the crank position sensor, sometimes it gets damaged during a tranny replacement.

If it is a 4.0 liter engine, the crank sensor is mounted on the left side of the block, on a 318 (5.2) it's on the right side. Either engine, it is just left or right of the top center attached to the block. If the sensor is ok, check the tone ring that the sensor reads. Pull the starter and manually turn the engine slowly while looking through the starter hole. Make sure the tone ring isn't dented or bent in any way. This is what tells the ECU where top dead center is so it can fire the spark plugs and injectors properly.

1996 jeep larado driving me crazy

Cars are like that. I think they like driving people crazy. I\'ve been driven crazy by my Sentra for three months now.
Has the fuel pressure been checked? I wonder if your fuel pressure regulator has failed (the diaphragm inside will rupture and suck extra gas in through the vacuum hose attached to the regulator-could be the cause of backfiring). Something to check, anyway.

No reverse 1994 jeep grand cherokee larado atomatic

Well, most likely it is a burned out reverse clutch pack. Which would require a trip to a tranny shop. The sooner the better, the longer you drive with the debris in the tranny the higher the likely hood of requiring a complete rebuild instead of just the reverse clutch pack. I hope this helps please rate this thank you

When i put my 08 jeep grand jerokee larado inreverse

pull the shifter back slowly out of park and see if it engauges before or after the reverse position this could just need an adjustment in the cable if not it's an 08 you probably still have a warranty on it i would take it to the dealer if no warranty ammco or any othyer transmission shop can run a few tests on it for a low fee

Have 1996 jeep grand cherokee larado with chrysler 318 engine and auto transmission, all the time four wheel drive with I believe to be a NP249 transfer case...have not used the low gear range for...

4L is for ice or dirt only.
here is the wiki on this boxc

In 1996 the NP249 was replaced with the New Venture Gear NV249 transfer case. This added a mechanical differential lock to 4WD Low mode, making it much more durable for serious off-road use.

stay out of 4low (unless serious off road)
