Evap vent solenoid code p0446

Dealer wants 610.00 dollars to replace, reprogram ecm and for some reason wants to do fuel induction flush?

this is on a 2005 chevrolet colorado 3.5l 32700 miles...they say part is 100 dollars and not sure about cost to reprogram ecm...I have talk to other mechanics they think price little high, and do not think flush has anything to do with fixing this code, but they cannot do cause they do not have capability to reprogram ecm...any thoughts?

thank you, jerry

thanks emissionwiz...does this price seem little high....I paid them 100 dollars to find the problem....but in talking to other repair shops they say the correction of check engine code p0446 replace evap vent solenoid and flusing of the f/i system are two different issues...all i want is the check engine code fixed so I can pass emissions when I have to get my tags renewed...this code just started last week....

  • virgovette Apr 21, 2009

cadman000, my thoughts too!!...the dealer also stated the diag also found slight misfires...my truck has been running fine since I bought it....sittling idle same as it was when I first took it off tthe show room floor...

  • virgovette Apr 21, 2009

any idea what this should cost? talking to other mechanic not dealer...he thought something like this....100 for orginal diag...according to labor book another half hour to replace solenoid (50 dollars) and some where btw 75-150 for ecm reprogramand 100 dollars for part for total of 400 dollars not 610 dollars...I have to talk to dealer 2 morrow to get breakdown....

the "FUEL INJECTOR FLUSH " , will only make the dealers pocket greener, although it surely will provide a cleaning benefit.

that is between you and the dealer, I am sure they have there reasons for this proposal of work to be preformed, worked in dealers 30 years never recommended any work that was not needed.

Code po446 what is it

Its what is called the EVAP. system the code is for the vent solenoid .Gas vapor in a vacuum is drawn from the fuel tank when this vent is commanded to be open drawn into a canister filled charcoal and stored until the canister purge solenoid is commanded to open .
This happens when the engine speed is at a higher RPM level and is supposed to send the vapor to the engine to be burned instead of VOC'S going into the atmosphere .But its a crazy lie the last time I filled up more VOCS got into the atmosphere then a gas tank vent could do in 6 month or so .
You can try cleaning the filter in the vent solenoid it might work but the part is about 70 dollars its in the rear between the tank and the canister look for hoses .

My 06 cobalt has these codes can anyone tell me what they mean? Are they an expensive fix? p0446,p0455, p0172

code p0446 refers to evaporative emission (EVAP) system-vent control-circuit malfunction===causes --wiring--EVAP canister purge valve--ECM
code p0455 refers to EVAP system-large leak detected===causes --hose connections--intake leak--EVAP canister---EVap canister purge valve
code p0172 refers to system too rich, bank 1===causes intake blocked---EVAP canister purge valve--fuel pressure ---EGR system---injector/s ---ECM
because the EVAP purge valve appears in all codes I would be inclined to change that unit first the run the fault codes again

Codes 446 and 452

P0446 has nothing to do with the canistor !
DTC P0446 Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Vent System Performance
This DTC tests the evaporative emission (EVAP) system for a restricted or blocked EVAP vent path. The control module commands the EVAP canister purge solenoid valve Open and the EVAP canister vent solenoid valve Closed. This allows vacuum to be applied to the EVAP system. Once a calibrated vacuum level has been reached, the control module commands the EVAP canister purge solenoid valve Closed and the EVAP canister vent solenoid valve Open. The control module monitors the fuel tank pressure (FTP) sensor for a decrease in vacuum. If the vacuum does not decrease to near 0 inches H2O in a calibrated time, this DTC sets.

DTC P0446 - Evaporative Emmission Control System Vent Control Circuit
Evap vent valve has only one purpose. It closes in order to seal the vent so the EVAP system can pressurize and ensure there are no leaks. Evap vent valve is usually supplied Batt. voltage with key on. The ECM's driver controls the ground, and when grounded, activates the valve (closing it). If the ECM detects a short to ground, and open,or a short to battery voltage on the control circuit, P0446 will set. Code also may refer to ECM detecting that EVAP system is unable to achieve or maintain vacuum during test. A code P0446 could mean one or more of the following has happened:
  • Faulty vent valve
  • Open, short or excessive resistance on Vent valve control circuit
  • Blockage of vent valve
  • Bad PCM
Possible Solutions
  • Replace Vent valve
  • Repair open, short, or resistance problem in control circuit
  • Repair open, or short, or resistance problem in power circuit
  • Replace PCM

DTC P0452 - Evaporative emission control system, pressure sensor low imput
DTC P0453 - Evaporative emission control system, pressure sensor high imput

The PCM monitors the EVAP control system FTP sensor input signal to the PCM. The test fails when the signal average jumps above a minimum allowable calibrated parameter. If both codes are present, it sounds like your fuel tank pressure sensor has failed.

The sensor is on top of the tank and you will have to remove the tank. But your symptoms are pointing to more than just the sensor. You may have wiring problems.

Hope this helps (remember to rate and leave a comment about this free answer).

My 2004 Mazda 3 GT 2.3L is getting a P0446 DTC and is burning through a tank of gas in about 2-3 days depending on the amount of driving being done. My Mazda dealer believes that it may be the fuel pump,...

P0446- Evaporative Emissions Control System Vent Control Circuit Malfunction

Possible Causes:
- Missing Fuel cap
- Incorrect fuel filler cap used
- Fuel filler cap remains open or fails to close
- Foreign matter caught in fuel filler cap
- Incorrect fuel tank vacuum relief valve

Code is detected when VSV for pressure switching valve is ON, ECM judges that there is no continuity between vapor pressure sensor, fuel tank and charcoal canister (2 trip detection logic)

The vapor pressure sensor, Voltage Solenoide Valve (VSV) for EVAP, Voltage Solenoide Valve (VSV) for canister closed valve (CCV) and Valve Solenoide Valve (VSV) for pressure switching valve are used to detect abnormalities in the evaporative emission control system.

The ECM decides whether there is an abnormality in the evaporative emission control system based on the vapor pressure sensor signal.

Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0446 is recorded by the ECM when there is a malfunction in either the VSV for EVAP, the VSV for pressure switching valve, or in the vapor pressure sensor itself, or when evaporative emissions leak from the components within the dotted line in Fig. 1 below.
evaporative_evap_system_toyota.gif
The ECM closes the CCV and opens the VSV for pressure switching valve causing vacuum to increase in the entire EVAP system.

The ECM continues to operate the VSV for EVAP until the vacuum is increased to a specified point at which time the ECM closes the VSV for EVAP.

If the vacuum did not increase, or if the vacuum increased beyond the specified limit, the ECM judges the VSV for EVAP and related components to be faulty.

What does the diagnostic code P0446 for a 2001 isuzu rodeo mean?

Hi, your vent valve has malfuntioned. The vent valve is near the tank, and has a hose to the tank and a solenoid to close it. Check the wiring/connector. If OK, try applying 12 volts directly to the solenoid. If it does not click when voltage is applied, replace the solenoid/valve.

I ran an engine analyst and got codes P0446 twice and code P0431 once. what does this mean.

P0431 Warm up catalytic converter, bank 2 - efficiency below threshold
Possible causes: Catalytic converter, wiring, HO2S 2

Usually caused by worn out catalytic converter, but always check fuel pressure regulator for proper operation before replacing a converter.

P0446 Evaporative emission (EVAP) system, vent control -circuit malfunction
Possible causes: Wiring, EVAP canister purge valve, ECM

May be caused by a loose or disconnected wire to the vent valve or possibly a bad valve solenoid

If you would like part locations, troubleshooting or replacement procedures, please let me know.

OBD code P0746. Where is the Pressure Control

P0746 Pressure Control Solenoid Performance or Stuck Off
A transmission solenoid is an electro-hydraulic valve that controls fluid flow into and throughout an automatic transmission. Solenoids can be normally open or normally closed. They operate via a voltage or current supplied via the transmission computer or controller. Transmission solenoids are usually installed in a Transmission Valve body, Transmission Control Unit, Transmission Control Module or inside the Transmission and it helps regulate the pressure from the trans fluid pump.

Codes came up

P0446 This indicates that a part of the EVAP control system is no longer fuctioning correctly. EVAP emission canister purge is contolled by a valve which allows engine vacuum to pull stored fuel vapors from fuel tank into the engine to be burned, rather than be vented to atmosphere.
A vacuum switch is used to detect when flow exists. If the PCM commands purge and sees that the switch is closed (indicating no detected purge flow) P0446 is set.

When the vapor pressure rises to a specified point, the ECM opens the VSV for canister closed valve. Pressure will increase rapidly because of the air allowed into the system. No increase or an increase below specified rate of pressure increase indicates a restriction on the air inlet side. The ECM closes the VSV for pressure switching valve.
This action blocks air entering the fuel tank side of system. The pressure rise on the fuel tank side is no longer as great. If there was no change in pressure, the ECM will conclude the VSV for pressure switching valve did not close.

It is probly your evap canister vent valve is restricted. GM has a new design assy that repositions the vent so dirt wont plug it up, i suggest taking to a dealer to make sure, thay can use a tech2 to acurately diagnose the concern.

Good news is Likely, no symptoms will be discernible to the driver, other than the illuminated Check Engine Light.
Bed news A code P0446 could mean one or more of the following has happened:
Bad vacuum switch
Broken or damaged EVAP line or canister
Open in PCM purge command circuit
Open or short in Voltage feed circuit to Purge Solenoid
Faulty purge solenoid
Restriction in EVAP solenoid, line or canister
Corrosion or resistance in purge connector
Bad PCM

Good luck and hope this helps
