Question about 1999 Dodge Caravan

1 Answer

1999 Dodge Caravan overheating only while idling

The radiator has been replaced recently. When in stop and go traffic, a traffic light, in a drive-thru, or anyplace the car has to idle it starts to over heat. When we turn the heater on full blast and start moving, it cools down. While on the freeway, there is no problem. What could be causing this?

This would be your cooling fan module located by your air filter mounted on the core support.

Sure, have your system pressure checked. Worst case scenario, thermostat could be installed upside down or a bad head gasket. Also check for water in the oil or oil in the water. If you don't know how to do this ask at your local parts store.

My 1999 jetta keeps overheating. When I stop at the traffic light the temperature moves a little past the 190 mark. When I start moving it slowly goes back to 190. What might the problem be?

Does it make a difference if you increase RPM's when stopped at the traffic light? If so, you have a water flow issue. If not, most likely your radiator fan is not working properly.

sounds like the cooling fan might not be working..check to see if it is working or not...if not check the power to the fan to make sure it isnt a fuse or bad fan motor

air pockets in the cooling system can cause this problem. idle engine with radiator cap removed for 10 -15 min. Do not let engine overheat and make sure coolant lvl is topped off. this should bleed all air from system.

Try blowing the radiator core out with compressed air from the engine side to remove bugs and other debris. Make sure the fans turn freely with no noise and that they both come on when the engine heats up. Make sure the radiator cap has a good seal underneath. The three items at the end of your post are not likely. Check the radiator coolant level after it has run, then cooled off--it should be right at the top of the filler. If not, replace the hose going to the reservoir.
