Question about 1997 Pontiac Grand Am

1 Answer

1997 pontiac grand am

I have a question for the auto guru's I'm not sure about.

I was driving my 97 grand am the other day and it was working fine. Drove it about half an hour on the highway. Then when i got back to the city after driving for five minutes the car starting revving really high up to about 7000 rpms and the gas would not work at all. I had to pull over to the side and put it in park and then back to drive again. It seems like this is happening when the car tries to shift into third gear. I also noticed that it would happen around 35mph but if I kept it at 25 or 30 it still happened.

I think this has something to do with the transmission. But today I drove it again for about 15 minutes and it was fine. Anyone have an idea what this could be?

    Thanks 66 I'll check that

I just checked and it seems like there isn't one in this car. I called a local repair shop and they said that, the cable your talking about is only included with the car that has overdrive. If it helps any it's a SE and a 2.4L 4 cylinder coupe.

The car does seem like it is neutral. The pedal seems like it's all the way down to the floor when it happens even if I'm not pressing on it. As I said it revs pretty high when this happens if I press on the gas but if I let go it doesn't rev.

I checked it already when it happened, it didn't smell burnt but it was dirty. Could that cause it? And if it could should I get the transmission fluid flushed?

  • machadojr_fe Apr 22, 2009

    125K

  • machadojr_fe Apr 23, 2009

Ok I'll do that and let you know the results

  • machadojr_fe Apr 28, 2009

Sorry it took so long. The shop said the pressure was fine. Since I was there I had them hook it up to the computer to look for error codes. Nothing came up which I'm not surprised the check engine light is off. Anyway it's been running fine since haven't had the problem again. You think this could have been a fluke?

Actually it was raining so that does make sense. Thanks

Your transmission cable sounds like it is binding .It is attached to the throttle body like the throttle cable. could be in the cable or in the trans were it hooks up .if it holding your peddle down the you wont have a gas peddle. i hope this helps let me know what you find!

I'd make sure the core is installed right, like all the retaining brackets, etc. connected. Have the ph checked for your coolant. If the anti-freeze is too strong or weak it can cause this.

Try some motor honey. It can be bought at most part stores, advanced auto, autozone, ect. It worked for my 95 Grand Am when I had a leak in my oil pan gasket. Hope this helps
