When was the last time it had a tune-up? A tune-up will reveal a lot, if the mechanic is knowledgeable.

Check all vacuum hoses. Physically check the hoses all the way down, by squeezing them with your fingers. Visual observation Won't Do!

Sometimes, observing the hoses may only reveal the top of the hose, or not the entire length of the hose. Might look fine on top, only to be squeezed, and find the underside of this area of hose, will turn to powder in your fingers!

Vacuum leaks will cause a serious gas mileage defect.
(Also check the rubber part of the hard line, that goes from the intake manifold, down to the transmission modulator valve)
Clogged Emission devices such as the PCV valve, will have a detrimental effect on gas mileage.

Spark plugs are a No.1 item to replace.
Spark plug wires. Dirty injector, or injectors, are other items of interest, as well as the air cleaner element.

I have a 2005 chevy cobalt that is making a humming noise after 20 mph. I can also feel a vibration in the gas petal. "noise" increases with speed. Higher milage and just had struts replaced about 150

squeakey69 is right it sounds like you have a wheel bearing problem cobalts are notorious for wheel bearings going bad i would go ahead and change both front bearings because if one is going bad the other usually isnt far behind hope this helps.

Poor gas milage?

Thinking you are getting poor gas milage,Your engine is running smooth,no misses,Engine runs smooth while accelerating up a hill, Still poor gas milage, Check your tire pressure. I have a 1999 Chevy Blazer 4x4, 4.3 Ltr. Auto, loaded. I have just over 154000 miles on it,I change my fluids every 5000 miles. Summer driving milage got real bad. I drive a Blazer hard. I tow a 16ft trailor usally loaded to the top with wood. Tires get hot in the summer, while in the winter, they stay mostly cool. Always check your air pressure. Most vehicals are equipted with radials now days, So if you think a tire looks low, check it, Usally they low. Usally in the winter months, nobody checks tire pressure. It really does make a difference. I went from 17.2 MPG to 19.5 MPG, while pulling the same trailor loaded with wood. I cut my own wood then stack it in my trailor to sell. I have Good Year Wranglers size: P235/75R/15 I just replace these with new ones. The old ones are going on my trailor. Counted milage on tires are 65000 Miles. Tires were rated at 40000 miles, Under normal use.

Why is my 2002 Chevy Cavalier horrible on gas? I am only getting 17 miles to the gallon. I have a CNG tank but no filling station close by. Could the weight of the tank be affecting my gas mileage?

Cars are just like airplanes. Weight will always have an effect on fuel milage. Check your tire inflation. We find, in our shop , that low tire inflation in the biggest cause of poor milage. (beside a lead foot like mine)

Poor gas milage

Gas milage will vary, depending on the manner in which you drive, also poor gas milage could be due to poor maintenance. Replace the PCV valve, the oxygen sensors, the fuel filter, plugs and wires, and have the injectors cleaned, switch to synthetic oil should improve the milage. .

try giving your car a simple service, change oil, oil filter, air filter, plugs and leads etc. also get your wheels aligned and balanced as having bad geo can also be bad for fuel consumption. if that doesnt work then id recomend a garage.
