Question about 1995 Ford Taurus

1 Answer

95 ford taurus stalls in very hot temps. every summer. Fuel pump?

I live in las vegas , and for the last 5-6 years my taurus stalls out in traffic when the temp. reaches 105 or above. Once cooled off it runs fine. It scares me and my wife since you never know when it's going to happen. I read that some of the fuel pumps in these cars were defective. Kind of like a vapor lock. On disability please help.
Thanks, Harry Steeves

This is most likely a faulty ignition module. possible fuel pump but only if the tank is close to empty, where as fuel in tank helps keep the pump cool.

When this happens have you noticed what temp guage said? if it was hot then you might try a lower temperature thermostat and flush coolant system. If it doesn't actualy get hot coolant wise then a vapor lock in fuel system would be unlikely to my knowledge, car has fuel pump in gas tank and is fuel injected. If you only take short trips in car cooling system,<thermostat, water pump, coolant level and radiator> could be at fault and only when running for longer periods of time might cause overheating and not noticed on regular days on short trips.

95 taurus stalls out only on hottest days. after sitting for 45 min. it starts and runs fine again. no signs of engine overheating, or any other symptoms of fuel pump going bad. did it last summer and now...

I would carefully examine the exhaust system relative to the fuel system. You want to make sure the fuel lines are nowhere, too close to the exhaust system. Sounds like you may be getting a vapor lock in the fuel line. Under the hood too, by the crossover pipe. Hope this is helpful.

My 95 taurus will act like it is vapor locking on hot days. This only happens during the summer when I do more than just drive to work and back. I have had two certified mechanics look at it and change...

I would forget the vapor lock theory. It ran okey for years,so why not now
Vapor lock goes back 35 years to carburators and road race cars.

Did you have any overheating issues,or just thinking so?
Don't overlook an old and partially blocked converter. You haven't said what your drivability issues, really are!
Fuel systems aren't really to heat sensitive or know when summer is here.
You need to think simple, Ignition, fuel filter, pump could be partially plugged and working, but not much volume.
Tape a fuel pressure gauge to windshield and go for a drive.

Fuel problems

It is quite possible that your fuel gets cut off when the engien gets hot. So when the fault occurs- or let it idle for over 30 minutes to find it stalling - then check for the fuel filter block, fuel pump failure of the diaphragm. It will be better to replace and test once you find that the fuel flow reduces on heating of the pump. If not please check your HT coils for failure at higher operating temp. touch on the coils to see if it is hot.In such case the insulation would be low and needs an replacement as it fails to deliverr high temsion voltage. Hope this helps. Good day

95 taurus stalls out when temperature exceeds 102. The temperature gage seems to be in the normal range , when this occurs. Once car has cooled off, it drives fine. I have read that the 95 Taurus has had...

your evaprative emissions could be purging into the engine at that point too, giving too rich a mixture.

here's what you are referring to:

ISSUE: A reduced power, hesitation, stalling at low vehicle speed, idling and/or a no start condition may occur on some vehicles in hot ambient temperatures and/or high altitudes. In addition, a no start may result while the engine is still hot and the vehicle has been parked for a short period. A stall may also occur when moving the vehicle from idle. This may be caused by a lack of vapor ports in the fuel pump, resulting in a vapor lock condition or internal high wear of the fuel pump components due to tank contaminants.
ACTION: Perform normal diagnostic routines as described in the appropriate year Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis Manual (PC/ED). If the condition still exists after all diagnostics are followed, replace the fuel pump with a new turbine fuel pump. Refer to the following Part Application Chart for correct part usage. Also, replace in-line fuel filter with a new filter (E7DZ-9155-A). The new turbine fuel pump will reduce the possibility of vapor lock in high ambient temperatures. Refer to the appropriate model/year Service Manual for removal and installation procedures.
