Brake lights on 1996 maxima

My tail lights are on but my brake lights wont go on when the brakes are pressed. would i have to change the whole light? or the wires? this is my first car and i dont know alot about cars

You need to check the bulb first, they may be busted. if not , check the brake switch located where the brake pedal is. near the top part, so you have to look under your dashboard.

Where is tail light relay on 1998 nissan maxima?


Is it the brake light or the running lights, are all the lights on went the ignition is in the off position and the light switch is in the off positions aswell or the brake lights are on including the third brake light?

A car that old might be burned out taillight bulbs. Try them all! That should be your problem. I just changed the brake lights in a Quest. Same problem.

We have a Nissan maxima 1998, we have had mechanics fix out tail and brake lights 4 times...still a month later with the same issue. The lights stay on,and only the middle brake works when you press it...


Check the earth wire from the body to the battery or to the motor to the battery. It appears that an earth is not working so the current is seeking a return through other lights hence they stop working.

Sounds like the brake light switch under the brake peddle change it out should be okay.under 15 bucks at the parts store

TO SIMPLIFY,fuse box-pedal switch-tail light cluster,maybe something inbetween but hardly likely...start with cleaning the contacts for the brake bulbs as they may have verdigris on the brass connectors,then change the switch,then worry.

By the brake pedal is a brake light switch. replace that item
