Question about 1998 Mitsubishi Montero

1 Answer

1995 montero Backfire / not running

I have a 1995 montero 3.5 DOHC. It started out a good runnin car when we bought it but it had a knock. We did a variety of work with a multitude of problems. We fixed the knocking rod(rebuilt engine) then the timing went out and we got a bad head. Replaced the head, 1 piston, and the timing belt. It ran good at that point. After this we had the timing go out again because of a bent timing belt idler. After replacing ANOTHER piston w/ out removing the engine, we put it back together and it was making a clankin sound. We removed just the front end to get to the timing belt. Timing was set perfectly. We ran it and the clanking was gone. Strange. But then it stopped running and it won't start back up, and it'll backfire when trying to start. Timing belt is still in time.

I'd check cylinder compression and go from there.

Did you make sure the balance shaft belt was ok? Double check to make sure the timing belt is in time and tight. They have a two step tensioner that must be set in a certain order for correct timing.

SOURCE: timing belt broke bent valves

Hi!!This occurs when the ignition timing and fuel mixture are changed causing an excessive amount of heat. If the engine is running on a VERY lean or rich mixture, the temp will be so high to make the exhaust manifold glow red,. which would damage the catalytic converter making things worst.
You did not provide the vehicle's year and model, but, you should have DTCs stored in the PCM memory. Scan the computer for Trouble Codes and you'll find out if the mixture is in the lean or rich side and you can make the necessary adjustments. AutoZone, Checkers and similar auto parts stores let you borrow DTC Scanners.
Good Luck!! A HELPFUL - 4 THUMBS - rating for this solution would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for using FixYa.

Wrong Octane?
Your engine should use regular gas. But you might be getting some low grade gas. You can try using a higher octane fuel. Or try adding a octane booster.

Backfire through the exaust and hessitation

Backfire is the result of unburned fuel in the exhaust igniting. I would look at the timing. Could be out enough for this to be the cause. Good starting point in my opinion. Not usually a plug issue.

I have a 1995 Mitsubishi Montero, new battery and new alternator. Car loses charge while driving, can actually see the battery gauge going from 16 to 12 in ten minuets then gets to 8 and radio goes off and...

You need to check the charging system. Take a volt OHM meter and go to the positive and then the negative posts. It will tell you how many volts it is putting out. If it is not charging at least 13.9 volts, then you bought a faulty alternator. If the alternator is good then check the belts to make sure they are tight enough. When you push on the belt at about 3 inches from the alternator it should not give more than 1/4 to 1/2 inch. If it does move more, then tighten the belts. If it is a V belt, just tighten the alternator. If a serpentine belt, check the belt tensioner and belt routing to make sure it is on right. The diagram should be under the hood.

easy test on alt start car loosen pos cable.then take off cable from batterie if alt is good it wont cut out.if it does, more than likely your alt. if the belt was the problem it would be noticeable by squealing and audible slipping.and most voltage regulators are built into the alternaters these day.

On eccelaration it wants to backfire

Back firing under acceleration indicates that the engine is running to lean and you need to have the Montero scanned for any DTC codes that hope would indicate which sensor is causing your engine to run lean. They could be a bad O2 sensor, dirty MAF sensor, and MAP sensor, regardless you need to see if there are any codes to lead us to the lean condition to your engine. Good luck and hope this helps, Auto Zone scan free of charge and they can give you the step by step instructions to how to address the issue your engine has.

95 montero sputter and loses power when gas padel is push hard

If there is a check engine light take it to a auto parts store to double check what i think it is. If you O2 sensor has failed or your M.A.S. sensor (mass airflow sensor) has failed then your engine will not regulate fuel properly.
