1998 Chrysler Voyager Transmission problem

L have a 98 Chrysler Voyager with 3.3 litre engine and 4 speed auto, and the auto is 'playing' up.
Reverse engages, but when you use throttle in reverse it just seems to be slipping and will only take the vehicle back on level ground. All forward gears seem ok most of the time, being able to be on the highway doing hwy speeds, up to 110 kph, but around town/suburbia, going around a round about, in Australia, going clockwise on the round about, sometimes the trannie wont get out of second gear. Coming to a stop and shutting down and re starting can re set the trannie/computer? and then allows all gears to hook up. There is no clunking noises and all changes are smooth.
l took it to a dealer to get the codes read and there seems to be some problems.
They, the Dealer, said, if l remember correctly, said that it had gone into , limp mode, and after the codes were read they wiped them, parked the car, l paid the fee to have the codes read, jumped in ready to go, and could only get reverse, even when it indicated neutral on the indicator. No forward gears were then available, at all.
They were unable to reset the computer back into the 'limp' mode so l could drive out of there, (just like l had driven in there that morning,) so, unable to get a forward gear, thats where it sat.
Before the codes were reset,forward gears seemed ok, and reverse gear seemed to be slipping. Codes reset and reverse is now ok, but no forward gears?
Is this a computer, or sensor type problem, or will the trannie need to be renoved and dismantled to get an inspection done? The vehicle is regularly serviced and all fluid levels are always regularly checked.

    In relation to april 21, Dodge Caravan/Chrysler Voyager question and reply from motor 1258, or anyone that can help, if the vehicle can at 8:30 am be going down the road doing 60 miles an hour, then have the computer/transmission codes read at a dealer, then said codes erased/wiped from the computer log, then an hour later the transmission 'decides' not to engage any forward gear at all, to me, its not a terminal transmission problem, but a computer/electronics problem.
    Am l on the correct path of thinking, or have l missed something?
    A transmission cannot just pack it in having the codes read. Can it?

    That's why I suggested another diagnosis. the solenoid pack etc are all electronic, and I'm sure you know by now that anything electronic can go at anytime. Any good dealer or transmission place, should be able to narrow it down, whether faulty electronic part, or just a bad corroded connection. Limp mode is what your transmission will do when an electronic part, (speed sensor, solenoid pack etc., ) malfunctions, in order to allow you to get to where your going (hopefully) or to a repair shop. Usually won't let you go past 2nd gear.

    I'd have it properly diagnosed , as it may be a solenoid pack or something that wouldn't require a rebuild, if your lucky.

FYI, My 99' just had a rebuild put in it $2000. Lent it to family, and even before they left I was worried that mileage etc, was just about time for it to go. I had no warning signs, just something in the back of my mind said "anytime now". They made it to their destination 3 or 4 hours away, no problem all the way,then next morning running into town for groceries, spit, sputter clank, bang, done ! Piece came right out through the top of the transmission casing , big hole & a gear laying on top of the casing. Needless to say, they felt bad, but I just had a premonition it was time. That's why when those things act up, don't play around, get it diagnosed a.s.a.p. Trying to get through the week, can cost you big time. Here's to hoping yours is an easy, inexpensive fix.

My 98 plymouth voyager expresso 3.0 flex fuel will not go into gear. trans fluid is good. what can it be?


With that model of Plymouth it is likely auto transmission needs a service. I am assuming you have auto transmission. Need to press the brake pedal before you can shift to D. But if the lever is not moving at all then solenoids could have gone. Go to a transmission specialist for Plymouth voyager.

98 voyager 3.3 auto trans wont chande gears --seems to be staying in second gear --- hard to move from standstill --- engine temp light came on --- once transmission cools down it works ok til gets h


If you have been driving it, with it over heating as well as
low on fluid your pretty much done & will need a rebuild

If you just drove 10 miles-- then possibly you could have it
diagnosed & find a less costly solution- such as bad solenoids,
but I doubt it

1998 Plymouth Grand Voyager Expresso model 3.3litre spark plugs


Only use Champion spark plugs on a Chrysler product.
Your local auto parts supplier should have info to give you proper plug number. There should also be a sticker maybe on your hood, that has correct number as well.It appears to be RN14PMP5 if you chose the double platinum plugs, or RN14MC5 in the standard copper core. The double platinum are about twice the price but last much longer. Gap is .050". Don't let them talk you into a different brand, Champion only. I have seen too many Chrysler vehicles over the years run bad on other plugs.

Hate to say it but not very likely. Mine cost me $1500 for a rebuilt. Doesn't hurt to check a few local shops that deal with transmissions.
