Question about 1995 Mazda MX-3

1 Answer

I have a mx3 v6 1.8 and at idle or parking sometimes the engine will cut out. Ive noticed it mostly when parking when I have to let the revs drop off a bit and it just seems to drain completely when I start turning. It has also happend once on the motorway when stuck in a jam, I was idle and not moving, had my clutch fully pressed and my other foot on the break and the engine cut out. In all cases it starts immediately but obviously its kinda worrying. Ive searched and people have suggested fuel filter, plugs, leads but the general feedback is this doesnt fix this problem. Someone else suggested he had the same problem caused by a bad earth to the distributor. I have noticed when parking that the power steering does seem to drain the engine a bit, if the car is totally idled and I move the steering I see the revs dip. Is that normal? Does anyone else have any light to shed on this problem?

Its most likly to be the idle control valve that just needs cleaning out but only use petrol as carb cleaner can destroy the seals

Why does the engine revs drop too low and sometimes stalling when I engage any gear?

This can be either an engine management issue (bad idle air control) or a transmission issue if an automatic trans (torque converter lock up problem). Idle air control can often be cleaned so = cheap fix. Trans problem not so easy.

Hi there,

If you're willing, we can try checking your computer for trouble codes - this will help identify any electrical issues.

Note: there's a 50/50 chance this procedure will work (as this does work on the 1997 model):

- With gear in Neutral, start engine and rev the car to 2,500 rpm, then 'gradually' reduce revs down to idle speed.
- with park brake secure, slowly cycle the gear lever through each position (down to 1st, then back up, ending in Park)
- turn Airconditioning ON, then OFF - turn engine OFF - Within 5 seconds, perform the following Ignition Key sequence (without starting): ON, OFF, ON, OFF, ON (if done correctly, your ODOMETER should display a series of 4-digit codes). Please reply back once you have your codes..... Cheers,

Electrical warning light comes on when I stop and the engine revs drop to nil then up and down, sometimes cuts out,if i rev the engine a c ouple of times the warning light goes off and the engine idles ok.

ask a, local mechanic to have a look ,i suspect the idle motor but it could be the throttle sosition sensor under the dash ,its a renault so its impossible to read any diagnostic codes unless its an american market vehicle

Get a code test done and see what you find...sounds like a bat throttle position sensor but without proper testing, I would not run out and buy one,

Idle Rev Limit in 3.5L engine

yes this is normal. most newer cars are equipped with rev limiters so people cant over rev the engines without a load on it. the shaking is from the computer cutting off the ignition repeatedly when you reach the max rpm.

Engine runs but cuts off when its put into gear.

I helped another 3 series owner and he had a hesitation off idle, the hose was cracked, seems fairly common on high mile cars.
