You may need to have the bands in the transmission adjusted.
Check fluid level and change if necessary.

Why wont my transmission engage that i replaced?

The key may be in how long it has been sice you friend used it last.
If it sat up for an extended time period the seals could have dried/cracked due to no lubrication, there could be a varnish buildup in the valve body as well.

Just a guess on this.

If it did sit for a while, I would recommend adding Lucas transmission additive ( around 12-15 bucks the large bottle) to the trans and letting it sit and idle and run up and down for a while trying to soften the seals and cleaning varnish. It may take several hours. While in idle occasionally put the trans in reverse, neutral, drive, low 1,2 etc to have the selector ask all gears to move.

I don't normally promote brands but personal experience says that this stuff works....if there is a problem it can help with.

If this doesn't help I'm lost and it could be a trip to the trans shop. Hope not.

Good luck!

Dr.wheels will not engage in cold weather 4 wheel dr.

Torque Converter has to do with the trans

Why are you guessing at things

Google those issues

Wrong time of year to be diagnosing tranfer issues
you do that in warm weather

May be related to the front axle engagement due to the cold

95 corolla wont shift from 1st

Hi there:
Sound like the valves in the valve body are jammed or there is major damage to the gear sets which will not allow second gear to engage.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using FixYa, have a nice day.

Have you checked the level of your transmision oil? It sounds like it is low. If it is low obviously fill it to the full line. If it is full it sounds like your pump or clutch could be going bad and not building enough pressure. If that is the case you may need a trans rebuild. One thing I always try first is draining the trans oil. You do have a drain plug on this vehicle. Buy One bottle of lucas transmision oil additive and two quarts of trans oil. Fill until level is full hopefully this helps you out.

My 95 olds cutlass v6 3.1L sometimes wont shift out of third gear and it just completely shut off on the thruway... what does this mean?

Its possibly a bad shift solonoid on the trans itself. These trannys' 4T60E have 3 solonoids for shifting 1 for 1st and 2nd, 1 for 2nd to 3rd, and 1 for 3rd to overdrive. Its quite possible that the valve is sticking in the valve body. This can be a somewhat difficult job to do. But the solonoids arent that expensive. I would suggest a trans fluid flush and a new screen/filter and see if that helps. If you take it to a dealer the solonoid/s replacement will be around $800 or more.

1st thing to do is run a self test of the trans for trouble codes, sounds like a problem with the electronics, may be a poor trans connector connection or a solenoid issue in the trans.
2nd if the oil pressure is low and by your description it is, don't drvie the car, you will burn out the rod bearings then a new engine is needed, yes it sounds like a oil pump issue, there is no easy pump to change, jack the engine off the motor mounts and it makes getting it out easier. Please give at least a helpful rating, we experts do this for free, just want to help folks like you with car problems.
