Question about 1999 Ford Explorer

Fuel system 1998 Explorer

We have replaced. spark plugs, injectors, TPS sensor battery is new
Ran checks on fuel pump and on high side runss low low side runs fine.

What happens is this. Start off give gas and it "peters" out and all of a sudden we have to much gas and the engine roars and then settles down getting up to spped. At 50 (once it gets to that points) it sputters or misses like I have a cink in the line.

Also replaced cat converter.

What do you think ? Fuel pump ?
Coils?
oxegen sensors (two) ?

Thanks.

the fuel pressure at idle was 31psi, spec says 30-40. then when i disconnect the vacum line to the voltage regulator, the pressure jumps up to 39.5, when the spec says 40-50.

the fuel filter is new, and i dont belive it is a fuel pump, becuase it is not starving for fuel at high rpm and if it was a low fuel pressure symptom then it would bog down and cut out, it just has no power at low to mid range.

my mom asked the first question...im the son and have been doing most of the work on this thing after we got it back from the shop and they did a ton of work, billed us for it and didnt fix it.

    sorry i mean fuel regulator.

to help you guys understand the problem, its like an old carburated engine, that has the high speed circut blocked, and when you go to punch it, it bogs down, eventually building up speed and when it does its fine.

this is what it acts like.

    compresion is good

    new plugs

    new injectors

    new o2

    new tps

    new cat and exhaust system

    new fuel filter

checked fuel pressure - bit low but does not starve at high rpm

    inertia circut - fine

    not throwing any codes.

a thing i noticed while changing the plugs that instead of a tan color most plugs should be these were red, normally that is from a bad gas, but we have ran about 20000 miles since first getting this problem and still cant figure it out

no it was not a ford deal it was my moms "goto mechanic" he convinced her that even tho the car wasnt fixed it still needed these things done anyway. this was about three years ago, so no dice on that

take it to a Ford dealer, they can hook it up to $75,000 Service Bay Diagnostic system and find out what is really going on very quickly, you have already wasted a ton of money, all I can really do from here is guess, I am a Ford electronic engine control master tech and this is my best advice to u..

take it back to the shop and make them fix it or refund the money, was this a Ford dealer?

    what is the fuel press?

O2 sensors will never cause this kind of symptom, ever.

coils will not cause this kind of symptom.

disconnect the MAF sensor and see if problem goes away, if it does replace the MAF.

Spray starting fluid arount hoses and intake while the engine is running to find the vacuum leak (also move intake hose around to look for hidden cracks)

Hi William, The fuel pump pressure is correct but the fault reading you followed means low voltage signal into the TPS. Seems you may have replaced the wrong part? I would think that the problem is with the mass air flow sensor or the ECU as that is where the signal comes from. Regards John

1998 ck2a lancer 4g15 no go. have replaced dizzy, computer and tps. has spark and injector pulse and timing is fine. any help appreciated

the next thing to check is the fuel system.
is there fuel in the system, the tank, fuel lines. is there fuel pressure at the injectors? check the fuel pump electrical system, the fuse, fuel pump relay, fuel cut off circuit. some factory security system have a fuel inhibitor, that disable the fuel pump circuit!

1998 grand maquis crank no start no injector pulse as well as no ignition spark. Have changed crank sensor, cam sensor, fuel pump, pcm, injectors and still no start no voltage to sensors or injectors.

Car not starting or turning over indicates towards multiple possibilities. It can be issue with battery or weak battery. But if battery checks out ok, then it can be starter issue or faulty alternator or problem with low fuel pressure or no spark at spark plugs due to dirty spark plugs or faulty ignition coil or injectors getting cracked or dirty and needs to be cleaned.

To confirm the problem, the basic troubleshooting is required.

COULD BE WEAK FUEL PUMP WEAK IGNITION SYSTEM CAUSED BY A BAD COIL CLOGGED AIR FILTER..CLEAN FUEL INJECTORS SEE IF IT HELP.IF NOT YOU HAVE LEAKING INTAKE OR LOW COMPRESSION CYLINDERS.CODE SCAN FOR FAULTY TPS SENSOR.

My truck did this after I replaced the fuel pump. Turned out to Fuel Pressure Regulator. It would crank and crank but never start. It's located underneath the black plastic manifold on the side of the injectors.

Try running some fuel injector cleaner through your fuel tank. What you may have are a couple of plugged or missfiring fuel injectors. I would suggest checking all of your wiring to your injectors to insure good connection, replace your fuel filter and check for vacuum leaks.

4.3 Liter V-6 Idles rough when in gear, runs fine on highway.

Can you check fuel trims at idle and under load?
If fuel trim is high at low speed and load, look for a vacuum leak.
If fuel trim is high at high speed and loads, look for fuel volumn problem or restriction.
If fuel trim is high at all speeds and loads look for pcm input fault, maybe a maf sensor problem?
If fuel trim is negative low speed and load, look for fuel pressure regulator or injector leak. If fuel trim is negative at all speeds and loads check ect and iac.

If you have the spider fuel system, that system is noted for problems. key on engine off, 60--66 psi fuel pressure.
