Will not start, or if we get it going it will die.

Small world, I have the same truck. 1986 SR5 extra cab 4WD.
I rebuilt the engine myself too. 22R-E?
Does it run for 2 seconds, then die?

I'm sure your distributor is in correctly.
I'm willing to bet the Mass Air Flow Sensor is the problem.
Mine was corroded and wasn't working properly when I had this problem. Check it out and see if the little door is swinging properly.

If this doesn't work, I have a few more good ideas.

- Let's make it easy. Do you know how to get the trouble codes from the computer?
Use a jumper wire on that Yellow plug with 2 wires near the coil. It's the one that doesn't plug into anything. Turn the key to the on position, than tell me how many times the engine light blinks. Then, try starting the engine and tell me how may times the engine light blinks.
