It is the fuel level gauge mounted on the sending unit. Some manufacturers just started to release this part, instead of making you buy the entire unit. They are still expensive, but not as much as a $400.00 dollar part. Shop rate on dropping the tank is 2 hours. If yours can be accessed from under the back seat then the rate is one hour.

The switch is bad, they aren't too bad to replace. As for the fuel gauge, thats a seperate problem. Its actually a common problem on the Montanas. You need to replace the sending unit in the fuel tank. I always recomend changing the fuel pump at the same time, its expensive, but it will save you from getting stranded some day.

Gas tank reads empty after filling and driving for a second. Gauge slowly starts to climb back after driving for 5 plus minutes then drops again.

the flue sense in your tank is bad most likely but it could also be just a bad connection between it and your flue gauge witch can be caused by corrosion or a lose wire

Gas gauge on park ave 1999 does not give accurate reading. Jumps around. Can it be done without dropping tank.

Buick dealers have a diagnostic box that checks gauge sweep and range, an 0-100 Ohm variable potentiometer with key on can check this gauge however you must tap into the wire going for the sending unit at the tank. With a voltage meter check the four wire connection (only one)connector going to the top of the tank, find a good ground and check for voltage one will be 12 volts with KEY ON ENGINE OFF look for a 12 volt reading for 5 seconds and then it will stop this is for priming fuel rail and is to fuel pump, you want the ground side of the gauge the other two will be grounds, fuel pump and gauge. The grounds may be near the wiring harness going to the frame. In either case they will be grounds you are looking for the one that is not either ground or power, most likely it will be either a flashing light or very low voltage. Attach the pot to the gauge wire and have someone watch the fuel gauge if it is erratic the gauge is the problem. If the gauge sweeps slow and steady the problem is in the sending until in the tank. AND HAS TO BE DROPPED! Run the tank down on fuel as low as you dare and drop tank. Be carefull working with fuel can be very DANGEROUS if you are not experienced working around fuel DON'T Attempt!

I began having difficulty fueling my Saturn Aura. After a couple gallons of gas, pump stops and you have to ease the rest in. Also, the guage jumps to full when the key is turned on and then gradually...

You may have a fuel tank vent that isn't working. This vent allows air to exit the tank as fuel enters and when the air can't get out fast enough then the fuel can't enter properly and the nozzle at the gas pump will kick off and you have to trickle fuel in. A competent service facility of dealership should be able to diagnose this fairly easily. This problem shouldn't affect your gauge however so there could be a seperate issue there.

As far as the gas gauge level goes, it sounds to me like it could be the float ball system that is inside of the gas tank, which is connected to the fuel pump.I dont think your guage in the dash is broke, but i could be wrong. Sounds like something in the fuel pump area
