I have oil leaking into the tubes where the spark plugs go on the right side of my engine. However, the oil is present at the top end of the spark plug cables, rather than the bottom, indicating that its source is originating above the spark plug...perhaps at some seal.

My Subaru Service Center says that it is common in my OBS (2000) and that it is in a moderate condition for now.

Any ideas of the specific leak, and cost to repair it (fearing it will get worse at some point)?

Changed spark plugs/wires, distributor cap, rotary button, crank shaft sensor, new battery. It don't lose power, When you mash the gas, it just spits, sputters, jumps and uses a lot of gas. What to do? What to do?

The spark is good from the coil to the distributor, but no spark to the plugs

I just had this fixed on my suby today. The cause is that the spark plugs, go through the valve covers on the 2.5 l .When the o rings in the cover go, the result is oil in the spark plugs. The cost of the repair in Canada was about $500 including diagnostics as well as new plugs and wires About 1.5 hours labor and new seals and gaskets. It now runs like new. This is a common problem for this subaru engine as well as for the dodge neon.

Have you check to see if the piston rings still have a complete seal in the cylinder chamber?,  and is the oil leaking at all plug points?
oil leaking out of your plugs can only come through the piston chamber from my knowledge, and the only thing stopping that from happening is the piston rings, hope this info solves your problem for ya mate,

Spitting and sputtering like not getting fuel

It may have fouled your plugs, but you can tke them out and clean them. Use a small blade and scrape the carbon off.
You could also take the egr valve off and try to clean it. Use a wire brush. also clean as best you can the passages under the valve, they can get plugged with carbon. Use a new gasket when you bolt the egr valve back down. Keep trying to get the fuel filter off, but the egr cleaning should help.

Van Sputters And Loses All Power When I Accelerate

Internal combustion engines requires 3 things... fuel, air, and spark. You do not have enough of one or more of these. If the wires and plugs are old, change them.  Air filter, same thing.  Fuel filter can also clog up with stuff after awhile. When you take a look at the air filter check where the air comes from.  It is possible a little critter has built a home and blocked the air flow (rare, but, it has happened).

96 windstar,power lose

Start withe the cheapest fix first. When was the last time the fuel filter was replaced? Sounds like a plugged fuel filter but I would also check the air filter. It obviously has spark since it was running and if the air filter is clean then all that is left to check is the fuel system. When you turn on the ignition you should be able to hear the fuel pump cycle to pressurize the fuel system. If the pump does not make any noise, then hit the bottom of your fuel tank with a hammer. This will sometimes make the pump work again but should be replaced ASAP. Take off your air intake and look down the throttle body while someone else turns over the engine. You should be able to see the injectors pulsing fuel into the engine. Do you have a 3.8l engine? If so, they are notorious for the timing cover seals leaking. This means that antifreeze will leak into your oil pan and wash down your rod and main bearings. That means that your engine is in need of a rebuild.

This morning I was taking my husband to work and all of a sudden my car which is a 96 toyota camry started spitting and sputtering and shakeing real bad. Well I went out there and took all the wires off...

Good news. Oil doesn't leak up out of the cylinder so the oil came from above~ probably a leak in the valve cover, and ran down along something else into the spark plug hole. That might sound crazy if you didn't see oil anywhere else but the route it took is probably hidden by other components. The oil would have fouled your plug and caused it to run that way. If it was blowing up out of the valve it would have been burnt .
