Lift hood while running and lisen for a vacum leak and check all vacum hoses. if you dont find a vacum leak then replace the idle air cotrol valve. if the check engine light is on then make sure the code is not for the throttle position sensor. if so then replace the throttle position sensor.

There should be a sticker with the diagram some place under the hood. If it is missing you can find one in a Motor repair manual.

I have a 1988 F150 with a 302, the truck has a hard time finding a Idle

Many idling problems such as yours can be resolved by simply having the car tuned up ie , new air filter, change all spark plugs, oil change, etc... you'd be surprised by the outcome! Good luck.

High idle

If you have the 5.0 liter engine or the 5.8 litre there was a problem with the upper intake manifold gasket being cracked and sucked into the intake causing a vacuum leak and the result was high idle. Also a leaking egr will sometimes cause high idle.

1988 ford taurus 2.5 litre engine idles way to high and surges?

you most likely have a vacuum leak .please check the elbows for the pvc valve. some time they get soft and will devolve a hole.you can also get some carb spray cleaner .and when the engine is cool. so you don,t cause a fire. spray around the intake manifold . not the exhaust. you will lessen for an idle change .if you can effect the idle that's where the leak is. have a way to put out the fire. if you cause one. be ready before you do this test .

92 Ford F150 4.9L. starts good, idles rough, dies at slow speeds

4.9 litre ?? you having a laugh its a 10ton truck engine not a pick up -global warming machine, remove the pump/sender unit and check the gauze filter also look inside tank for a something floating around ,i think the idles is not a related problem to the vehicle losing power but their is a possibility you could have a problem with the little vac operated thing on the fuel injector line that allows the fuel through only when the engine is running

My 1988 f150 does the same thing..idling problem!

Having the proper thermostat in fuel injected vehicles is very important. They have a engine coolant sensor to tell the computer the temp of the coolant. If the engine is running too cold,(or cold all the time), the computer is going to tell the idle motor to raise the idle and to give it more fuel, which can damage the cat converter. These vehicles need a 192-195 degree thermostat. Also check the TP sensor (throttle position sensor for proper voltage) the green wire should read .7 to 1.00 volts.

1988 ford f150 running rough

Might want to change o2 sensor's, If they are not sending the right single its tell the computer to dump fuel. 1988 was using a fuel density system.
(1989 came out with Mass air flow system)
Check this
I think it might have a TFI module that's not working right. Located under distributor. Its gray and about 4" long and if equip, you need a 4 or 5.5 mm tool to unbolt it. This was a common thing back in the 80's. Its been so long I can't remember if the 4.9 straight 6 had it or not.
