Question about Audi A3

I bought a 2004 Audi A3 2.0 Tdi. The engine was running little rough but it sounded more than a louder than usual diesel knock.While I was driving it suddenly made a louder noice and didn't want to pick up revs. I have traced the noice back to the flywheel. After removal of the flywheel I discovered that it has rubbed at the back against the aluminium sump and also caught on the main oil seal at places. This resulted in aluminium blobs sitting against the back of the flywheel. I saw that there was play on the flywheel when you try to turn it in any direction and that there is no movement at the front on the cam-belt side.I then removed the sump and discovered that the crankshaft is broken at the main bearing between no.3 and 2 piston.The "spacers" on the flywheelside of no. 3 mains bearing which prevent horizontal movement is also badly damaged, in fact the bearing cap need to be replaced as the crank did rub against it. Some of the mains bearings show heavy wear as the copper on the bearing starts showing while the big-end bearings still seams fine. 1.Why would the crank break ? 2.Is the wear on the bearings, and the break, due to the vibration caused by the flywheel rubbing against the sump ? 3.. Could it be poor workmanship as it seems that the sump and flywheel were previously removed and worked on ?

I have experienced this when rebuilding engines. and what happens is the crank shaft will not get reground right and that will cause it to walk against the thrust bearings. and that is why you heard the scraping sound. and also if it is not the right fly wheel it will cause the engine to be out of balance sending the catastrophic failure to the crank. also this could be the cause of a lack of lubrication in the engine. I would try to see what work has been done to the car using a car fax report wich you can get online by entering the vin# website is if you need more info just let me know and i will do my best to answer any more questions you might have

Ran out of diesel 1.9 TDi 74kw. have refuelled and cranked engine for 15mins and still it won't start. there is fuel from tank to filter, to pump and return flow.

This is very important for Audi 1.9 TDI engine: IT IS FORBIDDEN TO RUN WITHOUT DIESEL FUEL IN RESERVOIR !!!
This type of engine is equipped with pump-nozzle injectors which develop up to 2050 bar injection pressure !
Remove the fuel filter, fill up with diesel fuel and put in place. After that try to start the engine with accelerator pedal to the floor. Heed of electric starter motor temperature and battery status! After 40 - 50 sec. of start attempting wait for 1 - 2 minutes for battery and electric starter motor revival. After few starting attemptions the engine must start.

I have a 99 intrigue 3.5l no engine lights on,runs a little rough,loud knocking sound seems to be in top end of motor,any tips on what to check

sounds like a valve you can buy a stethascope and run it over the valve cover to be certain if the knocking gets louder then thats your problem if not it could be any number of things take it to have it checked out

My Audi A4 2000 TDI year 2005 has run on two tanks of Bio fuel recently and it hasn't recovered... started stuttering. Fuel system has been flushed out, air flow mand air flow meter has been changed but...

Audi 1.9 TDI and 2.0 TDI engines with pump-nozzle injection system, (year 2005 included), don't have permission to run with Bio fuel !!!
First you must replace fuel filter, interflow a quality Diesel additive (for 60 liters Diesel fuel dosage) fill up tank with Diesel fuel and run at least 300 km on highway at 3000-3500 rpm in 4-th gear.
I recommend you Foerch Diesel Reiniger System additive! I use this additive from 3 years ago and is certified on Audi TDI engines!

They are saying it dropped a valve - what does

Can't say if it's common as I have little experience with your engine in particular, but a dropped valve usually means a valve spring broke and the valve is colliding with the piston. This would also cause the engine to run rough as there is no spring pressure to close the valve. Piston damage is not far behind (major repair).

Make sure oil level is adequate.

Also, this could be an exhaust leak that is being closed as the manifold and/or block heats up.

I don't think it's a problem really - you have a diesel (TDI), which is known for low-end torque, but very little top-end power. If his car is a gas-engined car, it would explain why it has more upper-end power than yours does. But a diesel is not made for top-end power, so the lack of it in your car isn't an issue.
