Question about 1986 Toyota Pickup 4WD

1 Answer

Only goes into 4WD sometimes

My '86 4x4 has been having problems and I think it must be the transfer case. It goes into 4 wheel drive only sometimes now but the 4wd light is on.

No, it is when I put it in 4WD that the light comes on, but the transfer case doesn't always engage. Today it went into 4WD but I am nervous to go off-road because the last time I did I got stuck when the 4WD wouldn't engage...So it is a sporadic problem and quite mystifying!! Thanx though for replying to me!

Well, other than rebuilding the transfer case, you can try changing the fluid and use a additive with the new oil. That may lube up the gears better from sticking into 2WD.

When I shift manual shifter from 4 wheel drive back to 2 wheel drive, truck does not want to return to 2 wheel drive. Dash light goes off as expected. No service light comes on. I did put truck in reverse...

Just to confirm, you don't have an electrical 4WD selector; you have to move a shifter on the floor of our cab? If that's the case, I'd suspect that you have a linkage misalignment or malfunction that doesn't allow the 4WD selector to completely return to the 2WD position. Putting the truck into reverse and back to drive probably causes a jolt to the 4WD linkage which disengages the transfer case from the driveline. Check for slack or binding in the transfer case shift level linkage (clean and lube the linkage won't hurt).

If the transfer case actuator is working correctly, the only other possibility is the front disconnect mechanism. If this part of the 4WD system is not engaging then the Transfer Case Control Module (TCCM) will not allow the system to go into AWD or 4WD. Do yourself a favor and find a mechanic who knows GM 4WD systems.
BTW, operating the truck in AWD is not good for the drivetrain, if you need additional traction, switch to 4WD.

So I would think you have locking hubs on it? So you lock the hubs in and then put it in 4wd and driving sometimes it stays in 4wd when you want to shift it back into 2wd? Sounds like the shifter inside the transfer case is hanging up. In some cases if you drive faster than 50mph and try to shift it back to 2wd it won't do it, unlock the axle and back the truck up to reline the spline gear in the transfer case. I would request the transfer case be replace since its under warranty. And as far as Ford telling you they can't do nothing look in your owners manual and call the complaint office and tell them what dealer you went to. Also I would go back and talk to the manager sounds like someone doesn't want to do his job.

Check 4 wheel drive light appears after 4x4 is engaged.

the sensors inside the t-case show that no lubricant is present and just needs a cycle of use to read correctly, or a new tranfer case switch $60 and 30min.
