Question about 1996 GMC Suburban

1 Answer

Emergency Brake Cable Is Broken

I am not a car repair person at all, but with help, can hopefully avoid a costly repair. I have a 1996 Suburban and the cable that releases the emergency brake when you pull the handle broke during our fabulous snow storm. I can release the emergency brake manually (I looked underneath at where the cable probably went and was able to pull on a part that released the brake). Is the cable an easy item to find and more importantly, is it easy to install? I'm so in the habit of setting the emergency brake and am now pulling on the broken handle to release the brake. Help! Thanks!

My 02 Subrbn's parking brake cable broke. I just followed the cable tubing from the hand release handle around to where it used to be attached to the metal brake gadget (on the very left in the foot area), and pulled it very far forward and it released! (I also held down the food pedal and eased it up as it released to avoid getting smacked.) So easy, I didn't need my husband to come home and do it for me!

Somewhat easy to replace. The part is a dealer item (purchase only from Chevrolet dealer) If you are going to do this yourself, take many photos on the progression of the job to refer back to when putting it back together. Good Luck!

Emergency brake cable installation

Purchase a Haynes repair manual for your vehicle. It should have step by step instructions with pictures showing how to replace a park brake cable.

Good luck, I hope this helps!

Break lights not working

if your brake lights aren't working you need to take the car into a dealership right away to avoid getting ticketed for broken lights. Once at the dealership explain your problem and they should repair the problem in a day or two and your insurance should cover the costs. If your insurance doesn't cover the cost it won't be very expensive to repair.
hope this helps!

Brake realese cable broke from inside vehicle how do i unlock the emergency brakes

You will need to get underneath the vehicle and loosen the emergency brake adjuster to relieve the tension on the cables. Bear in mind that untill you replace the broken cable and readjust the emergency brake, you will have no emergency brakes.

I have no brake lights i replaced the bulbs and checked the fuses still no brake lights

the problem may be with this light switch, this is placed somewhere on the brake pedal or the braking system if the switch is broken or disconnected the lights can not go on.

I hope this was helpful.

Pulled emergency brake cable to disengage and cable snapped...any way I can release the emergency brake without it?

the tension is set at the pedal so it should have released if it is still engaged at the wheels then you have a seized pivit point at the wheels of in the cable its self after the break.

My emergency brake cable broke on my 95/96 chevy s-10. we are trying to figure out how to release the emergency brake so that i can drive the car home.

I'm confused if cable is broken how are brakes locked? The cable should go to the rear wheels. At one point somewhere under the car you should be able to find cable and release it around the middle of truck. The cable should pass some kind of pre-tensioner. Hope this helps.

Emergency brake stuck, pedal release broken

What happens is the brake cables rust inside the cable sheath and then they won't slide easily. There's no good fix for this other than replacement. It's not easy to even find where they are stuck. It might be possible to find the end of the cables at the back wheels and pull the cables back---to release the tension
