Question about 1988 Ford F 150

1 Answer

88 ford f150 inline 6 wont start...

Truck will crank but will not turn over but for a second if i spray gasoline or starting fluid into air intake but then it cuts rights back off. i checked the fuel pump and pressure regulator and they are both working fine. im not sure what else to do. it is fuel injected and im thinkin maybe that the injector has gone bad or valves are stuck closed and it isn't getting any gas or they are stuck open and is choking itself out... does anyone have any suggestions?

My '88 Ford F150 quit on me too. I have a good stream of fuel from the tank to the engine. I have spark to the plugs and distributor, but it wont start up. My truck is also fuel injected. What should I be looking for, the ignition module?

Check to see that you have fuel all the way to the do this: pull the fuel pump fuse and, crank the engine a few times to releive pressure then open the fuel line, cover it with a rag for safety then: replace the fuse and, crank the engine just for a second or, two if no fuel comes out it's another fuel filter probably on the truck frame rail that is the problem or, low pressure from the fuel pump

ok get a timing light hook it up. do you know how? then (you can not hurt your ignition module or, car's computer with a timing light) if it flashes when you turn over the engine your ignition (spark) is good

Probably bad gas, if you didn't put stay-bil or equivalent in the gas, when you parked it. Try taking the air filter out and spraying starting fluid (ether), into the air intake, while cranking the engine, if it starts, but only runs for a few seconds, the gas in the tank has probably gone bad, if it starts, and runs, you lucked out.

I have 1989 ford f150 and it turns over but wont start. I have checked the wire harnest, fuel pump, fuses, fuel relay, Help. It turns over and it has spark but not starting.

have you tried to spray starting fluid into the intake while cranking the engine over. if it starts then you have a fuel problem, possibly injectors or poor fuel pressure or volume. you say you check the fuel pump but not how. you have to use a gauge and not just push on the Schrader valve to see if gas is present. it could also be a timing issue.

My 1997 f150 will turn over and crank but wont start

one thing to try is spray starting fluid in the intake if it runs on that you have a fuel problem if it won't run at all on that it would be a spark problem

2001 Ford f150 ran fine, 30 minutes later it cranked rapidly but never started again?

Get a can of Starting fluid from the parts store and spray it into the air intake hose to the engine, if it fires up and stalls right away you have a fuel pressure issue, more than likely a defective electric fuel pump inside the gas tank.

My car has been sitting for 2 years and won't start. The engine turns over but it sounds like not getting gas. I read somewhere to spray gas starting inside air intake valve. Where is the air intake v

Safer is to use 'carburetor cleaner' which is also flammable but a little less dangerous than using gasoline. After sitting a long time, our modern gasoline gets tired; never allow something to sit so long without adding some 'fuel stabilizer.'If possible with your car, I would drain (siphon) the tired gas out and replace it with a few gallons of fresh.
Really tough starting problems can also be overcome with 'starting fluid' which is pure ether and very flammable.Any of these may require the removal of the engine air filter so the liquid gets into the intake manifold.
Stale gasoline can also gum up the fuel injectors which may have to be removed for service if none of the fluids causes the engine to fire.

1989 ford f350 diesel 7.3 will start with starting fluid but wont stay running

Never, ever use starting fluid in your diesel.

Taken from the Owners Manual - Diesel Supplement:

Do not crank the engine for more than 30 seconds at a time as starter
damage may occur. If the engine fails to start, turn the key to OFF and
wait 30 seconds before trying again.
Do not use starting fluid such as ether in the air intake system (see Air
Cleaner Decal). Such fluid could cause immediate explosive damage to
the engine and possible personal injury.
Do not add gasoline, gasohol or alcohol to diesel fuel. This practice
creates a serious fire hazard and causes engine performance problems.
1. Make sure all vehicle occupants have buckled their safety belts. For
more information on safety belts and their proper usage, refer to Seating
and safety restraints chapter in the owner guide.

1997 ford expedition will not start turns over

Try spraying starting fluid into the intake of the air cleaner while someone else starts the car. Keep a continual spray going while the car is cranked. If the car starts more than likely the fuel pump went out.
