Timing marks. position?

Need to know what position (ie both up or both down or whatever) i need to put the timing marks in so that the timing on my toyota corolla is right when i replace the cam belt

    ok well my cam belt is mounted on the left side of my engine (looking from the front bonnet) in front of my drivers seat. single cam only. does this make a difference to how the timing marks should be facing? my cam belt broke while i was driving so i can pretty much guarantee that the timing gears wont be in the correct positions.

    i know i have to take several other belts off (attached to alternator and also my power steering belt) and hoist my engine to get my cam belt over my engine mount. will compression test to see if valves are bent.

    i dont intend to have to take my engine apart much if i can help it at all.

    on my timing gears the only marks are holes in one of the spokes. internet says thats what im meant to be looking for.

    just to clarify the top gear's mark needs to be facing back at me? (in drivers seat) and the bottom gear's mark does too? parallel to each other?

    i got told that the top mark was meant to be facing directly up as was the bottom mark...

    Sorry, tried to post a illustration. Dumb move!

    The 4AGE engine is a dual overhead cam engine. Each cam gear has a dimple mark on the front of the gear, and is on one single tooth.
    (Used to have a 1986 Toyota MR2 with a 4AGE engine in it. I replaced the timing belt)

    On the cylinder head there is a mark. This mark lines up with the dimple mark, on the timing gear. There is a mark on the cylinder head, for each cam gear.

    As you view the cam gears, the mark for the right camshaft, is towards the inside of the engine, on the cylinder head. The mark for the left camshaft, is also towards the inside of the engine.

    If you drew an imaginary straight line, (Or you can use a straight edge), up and down through the center of the camshaft gear, the mark on the cylinder head, is one tooth over to the inside.

    (All orientation is from sitting in the drivers seat, viewing towards the front of the car. This is a standard. Passenger side of car is the right side. Drivers side of the car is the left side. I just want both of us to be 'On the same page'. Looking from the front of the car towards the engine, the right side of the engine, is on your left. See how this could be easily confused?)

    Down on the crankshaft gear there is a mark. Viewing the crankshaft 'snout', there is a key in a keyway. The crankshaft gear slides over this key. With this keyway straight up, the mark on the crankshaft gear is two teeth over to the right. (This time, the right is from viewing straight towards the front of the engine)

    There is a mark on the oil pump. When the mark for the crankshaft gear, is lined up with the mark on the oil pump, the number one piston should be on Top Dead Center. (TDC)

    You have the timing belt tensioner bracket bolt loose. Slip the timing belt over the cam gears. Thread the belt down along the right side around the crankshaft gear. Using the proper tool, pull the tensioner to the outside, and thread the belt in. Belt straight, EASE the tensioner in. DO NOT let it slam!

    If everything is still lined up, tighten the tensioner bracket bolt down. Just tighten it down until it is tight, but not torqued.

    Temporarily install the crankshaft bolt. Run it all the way in. Use a 1/2" breaker bar, and the proper socket, put it on the crankshaft bolt head, and turn to the right. Do NOT get carried away! Should it feel like it won't turn, Stop!

    You are testing to make sure you have everything lined up.
    A camshaft turns two times to one turn of the crankshaft. The camshaft must be coming up on opening the No. 1 Intake valve, when the crankshaft is on TDC.

    IF, you have disturbed the setting, of how the camshafts were sitting,when you took the timing belt off, or IF you have disturbed how the crankshaft was sitting, when you took the timing belt off, you have to set everything back in the proper alignment.

    I'm hoping you didn't disturb how the camshafts, and how the crankshaft was sitting.
    IF, you have moved the camshafts, by turning them once, you could have them 180 degrees out of time.

    Putting the engine together, and trying to spin it over with the starter, could result in bent valves!

    If you have not turned the camshafts one full turn, nor the crankshaft, the static timing should be okay.

    I'm assuming that all along now, that you have the battery disconnected. BOTH cables should be off of the battery. Less chance of the Negative battery clamp accidentally flopping over, and touching the Negative terminal of the battery. Sounds 'Over the Top' with safety advice, I realize, as this is a side post battery.
    I'd rather come off sounding like a 'Worry Wort', than have ANY possible chance that you may be injured!

    Now if the crankshaft turns along, and it doesn't feel like there is a bind, rotate the crankshaft -> Twice.
    Then check to see if the alignment marks are still in the same place. If so, torque the belt tensioner bracket bolt down. Remove the crankshaft bolt, install everything as it should be.

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.


    2. Raise and support the vehicle. Remove the RH wheel and RH engine splash shield.


    3. Lower the vehicle slightly and support the one side with jackstands. Remove the air cleaner assembly.


    4. Loosen the water pump pulley bolts and slide off the alternator drive belt. Remove all other drive belts.


    5. Remove the spark plugs.


    6. Remove the valve cover from the cylinder head. Discard all gaskets.


    7. Set the No. 1 cylinder to TDC of the compression stroke.


    8. Turn the crankshaft pulley and align its groove with the No. 1
      timing belt cover. Check that the valve lifters on the No. 1 cylinder
      are loose. If not, turn the crankshaft pulley one complete revolution.



    9. Remove the RH engine mounting insulator. Set the jack to the
      engine with a piece of wood between the jack and engine. Remove the
      mounting bolts and stay. Remove the bolt, two nuts, through bolt and RH
      mounting.



    10. Remove the water pump pulley.


    11. Using a special tool, retain the crankshaft pulley, then remove the pulley bolt. Remove the crankshaft pulley.


    12. Unbolt the timing belt covers and remove them from the engine.


    13. Remove the timing belt guide


    14. To remove the timing belt and idler pulley, loosen the idler
      pulley bolt. Push it to the left as far as possible, then temporarily
      tighten it. Remove the timing belt. Now remove the pulley bolt, pulley
      and return spring.






    1. Remove the crankshaft timing pulley.


    2. To remove the camshaft timing pulleys, secure the camshaft and
      remove the pulley bolt. Be careful not to damage the cylinder head with
      the wrench.




    1. Check the idler pulley by holding it in your hand and spinning
      it. It should rotate freely and quietly. Any sign of grinding or
      abnormal noise indicates the pulley should be replaced.



    2. Check the free length of the tension spring. Correct length is
      1.512 inch. (38.4mm) measured at the inside faces of the hooks. A
      spring which has stretched during use will not apply the correct
      tension to the pulley; replace the spring.

    3. Align the camshaft knock pin and camshaft timing pulley. Secure
      the camshaft and tighten the camshaft timing pulley bolt. Align the
      bearing cap mark and the center of the small hole on the camshaft
      timing pulley. Remove any oil or water on the camshaft pulley and keep
      it clean.
    20. Install the camshaft timing pulley and align the TDC marks on the oil pump body and crankshaft timing pulley.




    1. Temporarily install the timing belt idler pulley with the
      mounting bolt. Install the tension spring. Pry the timing belt idler
      pulley toward the left as far as it will go and temporarily tighten it.


    22. Install the timing belt.

    23.Check the valve timing and belt tension. Loosen the timing belt
    idler pulley mounting bolt. Temporarily install the crank pulley bolt
    and turn the crankcase two revolutions clockwise from TDC to TDC. Check
    the valve timing. Insure that each pulley aligns with the marks as
    shown in the illustration.

    24.
    Tighten the timing belt idler pulley bolt to 27 ft. lbs. (37 Nm). Remove the temporarily install cranks pulley bolt.

    25.
    Measure the timing belt deflection at the SIDE point, looking for
    0.20-0.24 inch (5-6mm) of deflection at 4.4 pounds of pressure (2 kg).
    If the deflection is not correct, readjust the idler pulley.

    26.
    Install the timing belt guide facing the cup side outward.

    27.
    Attach the timing belt covers, tighten the mounting bolts.

    28.
    When installing the crankshaft pulley, apply a light coat of
    engine oil on the threads and heads under the pulley set bolt. Align
    the pulley set key with the key groove of the pulley and install.
    Tighten the mounting bolt to 87 ft. lbs. (118 Nm).

    29.
    Temporarily install the water pump pulley.

    30.
    With the jack still in position, install the RH engine mounting
    insulator to the engine mounting bracket. Align the RH insulator with
    the body bracket and secure with the through bolt and nut. Tighten the
    bolt to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm), the nut to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm) and the
    through bolt to 64 ft. lbs. (87 Nm). Attach the RH mounting stay and
    tighten the bolts to 31 ft. lbs. (42 Nm). Remove the jack.




    1. Install the valve cover with a new gasket and cap nuts.


    2. Install the spark plugs, tighten them, to 13 ft. lbs. (18 Nm).


    3. Place all drive belts into position and adjust.


    4. Tighten the water pump pulley bolt.


    5. Install the air cleaner. RH splash shield and RH wheel.


    6. Lower the vehicle, check the fluids levels. Connect the negative battery cable.
    This time I typed from my old manual, instead of relying on my knowledge.

I have a 1994 Toyota corolla changed the timing belt tensioner. trying to set timing, all marks line up except camshaft dots, can't get them to face each other without throwing off all the other marks


If you removed the tensioner and didn't lock the cams and crank down then you have to re-time the engine. It sounds like you let the exhaust and intake cams move.

Remove the spark plugs, put a ratchet on the crank pulley, slowly rotate engine until the cams line up. Once the cams are lined up remove, the timing belt and bring the crank around to the timing mark. put belt back on and let the tensioner go. put plugs back in...see if it'll start.

Where does the timing mark on the timing cover line up on a 1997 Buick lesabre 3.8 liter?


Look on your VECI label under the hood (Vehicle Emission Control Information) for the base timing spec. When you shine a timing light down there on it with engine running at idle, the mark should be on the correct position on the scale-whether at 8 degrees Before Top Dead Center, or 10 degrees BTDC, whatever the VECI label says.

I need timing belt marks for new timing belt on a 1994 Toyota Camry LE 2.2L 4 cylinder


Firstly the no.1 piston should be at TDC (compression).

The upper camshaft sprocket has a smaller hole in the web. This should be lined up exactly with the TDC timing mark behind it on the cam bearing cap. In this position it will be vertically upwards.

At the same time the notch in the crankshaft pulley timing flange should be opposite the 0 degrees mark on the timing marks on the front of the lower belt cover.

I need to know how to install a distributor in a 1986 Chevy 1/2 ton Silverado with a 305 engine


OK...First turn the engine by hand so that the timing mark on the lower front pulley is aligned with the "0" mark on the scale. Align the rotor in the distributor with the #1 tower for that ignition wire (put the cap on and make a mark on the housing then remove the cap and use the mark as a reference).
Put the distributor into the hole in the engine with the rotor and mark aligned. You will notice that the rotor tends to turn away from the aligned position. Note approximately how far it turns and remove it just enough so the bottom gear disengages and you can turn it back so that after it turns, it is aligned more closely. If the distributor goes down all the way, lock ti down loosely. If it does not, keep light downward pressure on it and have someone turn the engine by hand and at some point, you will feel it drop.Then lock it down but do not completely tighten it. Turn the housing so the rotor and mark is exactly aligned and put the cap and wiring back on. At this point, you are either exactly positioned or are exactly 180 degrees out of phase. So, the engine should either start or it won't. If it fails to start, you will need to set the mark again and remove and turn the distributor 180 degrees back to the mark.
That can be avoided by removing the valve cover on the driver side and watcheing the intake rocker arm for #1 cylinder. When the rocker has stopped moving the valve and is in the "relaxed" position,
and the timing mark is set as above, the engine is at TDC after the intake stroke. The only difference in doing it without removing the cover is that you have a 50/50 chance of setting it at the top of the exhaust stroke that will not cause any damage but it won't start which is why you'd need to turn it 180degrees. Either way, remember to lock down the distributor fully after it starts and is timed.
I use the first method because it's less work and most often it goes in right. If you have the covers off then use the second method.
Providing there is nothing else wrong with the engine it always works.

Timing on a 1989 pathfinder need to know.who meany teeth are the between them,from one mark.to the next


it dosent matter as long as all the marks are lined up exact make sure the mark on each wheel/gear are in line ie,there is two marks on every wheel 1, on the gear 2,the other on the caseing behind the gear, line all marks and when you are happy put your belt on and tighten,adrian,,,,,,

The timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket should be at the 12 O'clock position.....the timing mark on the intermediate sprocket should be at the 6 O'clock position...in other words, the two timing marks are aligned.
The drive pins on the 4 camshafts must be vertical or perpendicular to the cylinder head, ie 90 degrees to the cylinder head surface.

I have a 1994 eagle talon i replaced the water pump and put on a new timing belt and i can not get the timing right i have tried everything i know what could i be doing wrong? I have made sure the number...


I'm looking at the manual (68030 Haynes) and it shows that if you have the DOHC you make the 2 marks onthe camshafts meet in the center.

That would be at the 3 o'clock position for the left one, and 9 o'clock position for the right one. the crank sprocket and oil pump sprocket align exactly with the timing marks.

NOW, on the SOHC single cam pulley, crankshaft and oil pump pulley all are to be aligned with their index marks, centered, and the balance shaft is to be with the weighted side down to prevent vibration.

I've done the SOHC and the marks are fairly centered when instlalling. Once you've got the belt on in either engine, you should rotate the engine in the normal direction for 2 full revolutions and recheck the timing marks at all positions, readjust, rotate and recheck until set on the marks.

Still need advice


Turn crank so that timing mark on front pulley is at 0 degrees.
Remove the timing cover and you should see a mark for the cam to line up with.
You want the cam lobes on No.1 cylinder to be pointing away from the followers wether they be rockers above cam or buckets below. This will be the compression stroke.
Once the cam timing is set you can recheck the distributor. It should point to No.1.

the easiest way I found is to take out #1 plug jam a rag in the plug hole with a sccrewdriver tight and tap the starter around until the rag pops out then move the engine the rest of the way by hand I looked for whatever information I have on that and I have no pictures to send you sorry if you have found this information helpful please give me a good rating Thank you ,Randy
