1996 Dodge 4x4 1 ton leaking pasenger front seal how to replace?
1996 Dodge 4x4 1 ton, just replaced front Axel U-joints, a couple a days later passenger side, notice leaking gear oil around lower ball joint. How do you replace the seal and any special tools needed? Need details. I bought a chilton book for that year but does not cover my truck only smaller trucks. (even though it says 1 tons.) Thank you.
Re: 1996 Dodge 4x4 1 ton leaking pasenger front seal how...
If u have u joints there should not any fluid near your bearing other than grease... if it is leaking anything other than that it is probably brake fluid... i would suggest checking your brake cylinder and brake line leading along side the passenger side

take a good hard look at the front cv-axle there is a rubber boot that has grease in it if its cracked you will have grease leaking from it more common the grease will end up on the inside of the rim and wheel well. if that boot is not cracked then the ball joint was filled with to much grease and the old grease was forced out most of the time it tears the rubber boot that protects and keeps the grease in, now you can wipe off the grease and it should be fine for a few years or so.
you need to pull off wheels, brakes, rotor /unit hub bearing, both axles and intermediate shaft, as well as the vac disconnec ton the front axle tube. if only the right side leaks then only then only pull the right axle and intermediate shaft and vac disco. it is a trick with a miller tool to replace the seal. the left side seal is inside the diff and the carrier has to come out to replace it. pete
I just replaced my front ujoint for the 2nd time and yes when you pull the outer axle to replace the u joint and then reinstall the axle it seems to dislodge or screw up the seal. the 1st time i had a shop do it and they fixed the seal but now its on me
This ball calls "swirl pin" You must replace "Swirl pin oli seals". Normally this is always leaking from defenders....buy good OEMs...Try to buy them which starts the letters "GO" on part number.
Also there are three oilseals inside the Swirl pin...1- Axel oil seal 2-grease seal Check them also......
was the seal put in correctly. there is a certain way that a seal must be installed. generally i like to bake sure that there are no burrs on the shaft that slides through the seal. also the rubber part of the seal is usualy dry and they should have given you seal grease to soften it up before installation. did you use a seal driver to install the seal? trying to just tap it in with just a hammer will usually damage it and then it will leak. double check to make sure it was the right seal it's been known to happen that you go and buy a seal and you get home and it's the wrong one. i'm sure the problem is a a mis installed seal. unfortunately when you remove the seal you will not be able to reuse it due to the damage . you will have to purchase another one. hope this helps. please rate this solution....thanks
