Question about 2001 BMW 5 Series

1 Answer

I have a 95 540 and had my a/c filled 3 times but it leaks out in a week. So i had my dryer replased because mechanic said it was bad. But the problem didnt go away. Mechanic told me to replace the compresor. But the comp. seems to be fine. He put in a dye liquid into system but couldn't find no leaks. Oh and another thing. The pressure of the sys. is 220. Kind of high. Please help?

Hi. I forgot to mention that when the comp. turns on the car vibrates. I don't know if that has anything to do with it. Buy the way, Where are those valves located?

Put some soapy water on the hi and lo schraeder valves - chances are there is a slow leak.
If your mechanic has checked with a blacklight thouroughly all connection points - there is nowhere for the coolant to escape but the valves.

High side <200psi. Low side <50 lb.
"A good rule of thumb with R134a is to run fan on High with all windows open and engine at 1500 rpm. High side pressure in PSI should be about 2.2 to 2.5 times outside air temperature in degrees F"
The extremely high pressure on the high side and normal pressure on the suction side indicates that the evaporator is overheating. The fan needs to be turned on when the A/C compressor is on.

If its going into the 200's then the compressor is obviously good. If the orfice tube is blocked, you will see a low side pressure drop in most cases. Check the condesor coil (near radiator) make sure its not dirty. A high pressure on the liquid side could mean several things. One, a dirty cond. coil, too much freon in system, a block orfice (or if equipped) a sticking TXV, or even outside temps too high.

Now that I think about it, first check if there is good airflow between the fan and the evaporator. If the evaporator is too far forward air will not pass through it... it will simply go around the evaporator.

Thanks for using FixYa!!

Those schraeder valves are the fill ports for the high and low side of the unit.

Vibration of the car when the compressor turns on tells me the clutch on the compressor is starting to (or has already) fail.

Here is a schematic of all the components in the system...

Whan the compressor kicks on - there should be SOME vibration - but not very noticeable.

If the car shakes any more than that - the mechanic was correct in his SECOND diagnosis that the compressor is bad.

Not convinced he has done a thourough check for leaks - as the coolant has no place to go but out of the system!! Not like when a head gasket blows - and coolant can be burned up in the normal combustion of the engine... in the AC system - the refrigerant is inside the system - or its leaking somewhere :D

Condenser coil is a common place to check - hard to see inbetween all the fins.

I have replaced the A/C compressor, clutch, and air dryer in my A/C system of my 2003 Kenworth t600. It also has a new condenser too. It worked good for about a week then it quit. Then it used to...

Did it leak which case you have another problem. Most places can't work on,a.c. system. Take it to a good garage with a certified mechanic that works on those. Worth the money, they will test the system and give you a list what it needs before filling the system. The use a vacuum check to check for leaks

I fill the tank to the top. When I drive over 200 miles the fuel gage reads 3/4 full and won't drop below that.

Sounds like the sending unit has a bad spot in the resistor that makes the float hang up at 3/4. You probably need to replace it.
The float has a wire that slides across a resistor as the float moves.

Leaking antifreeze all the time

Have your mechanics done a compression test? You may have an internal engine leak. Which would account for a lot of what you're saying. There are a number of other issues that you could be experiencing. If this has been done and you need other ideas, just let me know! Please let me know if this helped as well. Good luck!

1999 chevy cavalier oils like milk in coffee, antifreeze leaked bad last winter, summer only drove 4-6 miles a week checked every time I went to store, used 1/3-1/2 gallon antifreeze, now getting cold out...

you're getting water in to your oil that's why its milky. could be a bad head gasket ,cracked head, or a cracked block, usually one of the last 2. better get it to a mechanic, if its the block it would probably be cheaper to replace the engine, it takes less time and most places charge 75-100 dollars an hour

Have it checked by a mechanic it may be a bad head gasket OR a leak you are not aware of.

You may see white smoke out of the tail pipe that smells sweet, this means bad head gasket.

expensive to fix.

92 Toyota Camry, antifreeze leaking no leak found

have you had the undercarriage inspected for white stains from coolant, rust stains if your system is corroded? How many miles? has the water pump ever been replaced, that would be my guess, water pumps leak while the eng is running and the hot engine evaporates the coolant, so in many cases none on the ground. Also have the system pressure tested by a shop and put on a rack to check for signs of leaking under the car.

time for a new car.  You single handedly ruined this motor.  Don't waste anymore money on this car,  buy another car and do the prescribed maintenance as required. Think of this as an expensive lesson.
