2001 Ford Expedition: inexpensive new ignition (transponder) key?

I am currently experienceing a severe cash flow problem and don't think I can afford to spend the $150 - $200 it will cost to get a key to start my Expedition. Unfortunately, the only key I had for it went missing a few days ago and I need to get it replaced ASAP so I can go to work. Does anyone know of a cost-cutting measure I can use to do this? For example, I've seen loose old transponder keys lying around in and around the desks of car salesmen. Can a discarded Ford transponder key be reprogrammed for my vehicle? Or, can another 2001 Expedition key be reprogrammed and used? Any other suggestions?

At the risk of digging myself a deeper hole for sounding dense....would it need to be keys from the same year? also, is all that switching going to be worth it in the end, fiscally? Do you suggest going to a salvage yard to get the ignition, or lock cylinder, or whatever is necessary? Thanks for your quick response.

The old keys or another expedition key can be reprogrammed to your vehicle, the only thing is you would have to change the lock cylinder to match the key or swap the ignition from another expedition with that has the key

How to reset Anti-theft system on 2001 Ford expedition? The theft light will blink rapidly and the engine will not start but once the theft light goes out it will start

Security on Fords are a pain. First code readers can't/won't help you. It takes a scanner to read security codes. Yours seems intermittent. First, while it is acting OK, if you don't have an extra key for it, go get it and have it programmed it in. If this seems to take care of your problem, go get another and have it programmed. Transponders/keys do die. Thing with the keys, Ford requires 2 keys to reset the security, if your one key is dead. Now you have to have it towed, and purchase 2 new keys from Ford. Ford keys are cheap, But from Ford, your looking at close to $300 for 2 of them.. Scanners will give codes to point you in a direction. Some shops will read codes for free, Just ask them to read the security codes. Active and history codes are what you need to know. You would like to see no valid key/transponder codes. This tells you that it is a bad key, bad receiver or a bad wire close to the receiver. Receivers don't need programmed. It wraps around the ignition lock cylinder. $50 and an hour later, your back on the road.

Will a bad key ignition switch effect the inderctor light on the dishboard

New keys with cylinder may not have a transponder chip , or new keys will need to be programmed. you will require two keys equipped with proper transponder for your vehicle, and either new keys cloned with the old transponders. If you have lost the original keys , you will need someone to remove the original keys from the pcm , than marry the 2 new keys to the pcm. If you have an original key , try placing it by the lock cylinder when attempting to start with the key supplied with the new ignition cylinder.

2001 honda accord keys were stolen and the thief broke into my car. Do I need to totally rekey or can I just reprogram the transponder and have the doors not work with the old key?

Hello Sophie,

>> I would ALWAYS choose a LOCKSMITH
over a DEALER regardless of cost (strong opinion).

Very sorry to hear of your violation...
It never feels the same but now you are SAFER with the
knowledge ... you were never actualy safe.

If other than your CAR keys were ALSO taken...
YOU NEED TO FOCUS on those other KEYS
FIRST (particularly house & mail-box)

Truth is...
your car is never ANY safer than the GLASS IN THE Door
(and only we... the owners... care about that GLASS).

Car TRANSPONDER locks are another situation.

If you use a LOCKSMITH it will be cheaper & safer.

I have used eBay to get my new KEY and KEYLESS
entry fobs... AND ... would TRUST a LOCKSMITH worlds
better & longer than I could throw a DEALERSHIP...!!

My niece had her car UNLOCKED and her HIGH-END
sound equipment expertly removed THE NIGHT
following getting her HONDA serviced at
She nor I FEEL it was a coincidence (opinions)...

LOCKSMITHS trade on their excellent REPUTATION
and do the SAME work for half (or less) the COST.

REMEMBER to ask them the ERASE/OVERWRITE the
old keys & FOBs.

The locksmiths MIGHT know how to RE-KEY your existing cylinders (I think un-necessary)...
Dealers probably (opinon/experience) won't even TRY...

and of course...
NEVER leave anything of value in your car!!

My car will not start after someone try to steal it. I get a new key at the dealership and it still don't start

the taurus is equipped with a pats key system that has a key that communicated to the anti theft transponder. if the transponder, which is mounted around the ignition lock cylinder was damaged a it will need a new tranponder and a new set of keys . you will however need the dealer to program the keys. if you have tow keys now you might try getting those programmed first. if that does not work it will need a transponder nad keys and even possably a pcm

Hello flanaganssho.
The security system on your Ford is called "PATS"
Passive anti theft system.
There is a transponder code in your ignition key that sends a signal to an antenna surrounding the ignition cylinder that reads that key code.
For some reason that signal isn't being processed to deactivate the PATS module.
A scanner capable of reading the code(s) stored in the body control computer will lead you to the repair needed.
New keys need to be programmed to the receiver so they will work.
These systems are normally very reliable. You could look under the steering column covers for a broken or pinched wire leading off the ignition lock cylinder.
Other than that a pro will likely be needed to help get you going.
I hope you get your problem solved quickly and easily.

Thank you for using FixYa.

2001 chevy venture lost key

You must get a new key from the dealer. Bring in the registration, and photo I.D. Then they will cut you a key. After that, try this procedure....
  1. With a master passkey III key (Black), turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Observe the Security telltale, after approximately 10 minutes the telltale will turn off.
  3. Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds.
  4. Repeat steps 1-3 two more times for a total of 3 cycles or 30 minutes.
  5. With a master passkey III key, start the vehicle. The vehicle has now learned the key transponder information and the PCM has now learned the fuel continue password.
  6. If it does not work, you will need to get it to the dealer.
