1988 ford festiva fuel gauge and speedometer don't work

My fuel gauge read full this morning and I know I dident use a full tank of gas today. Now it is reading right at E. When I turn the vehicle off the needle will drop below E and when I turn the vehicle on it goes back up to E. I put gas in the car to see if someone siphered my gas or if I had a fuel leak and it stills read E. Then my Speedometer quit working. I don't know if they are both on a common circuit or if my speedometer cable just came off? Right now its late and I'm frustrated so any suggestions will not only help me fix the car but get my wife off my back and out of my ear. Thank you for your time and help.

Thanks for the information. I fixed it but I don't know what it was. I checked the wires and they were exposed some, so I taped them up. Then when I pulled out the fuel sending unit, I heard something fall to the bottom of the tank. The sending unit is good. So when the tank is empty I plan on finding out whats inside the tank.

The speedometer cable came disconnected when I pulled the instrument cluster out yesterday. So I reconnected and it works. Thanks for your help.

Its possible the sending unit in the tank is stuck and your gas tank is actually empty.
Or there is junk floating in the bottom of the tank and the pump is now clogged up.
Have you checked fuel pressure with a gauge ?

Fuel gage not working

Charge light could be due to Alternator starting to fail or maybe loose belt to alternator. Or loose connection at alternator or at battery. Check wires along the circuit path and make sure everything is tight.
As for gas gauge, you may have a bad sending unit which is usually IN the tank or a bad connection between the unit and the dash. I'm not aware of a working gauge being a necessity for passing emissions but maybe so.

Your problem is the fuel gauge sending unit. It needs to be replaced. Another benefit of owning the durable festiva is the access panel under the back seat. You don't have to drop the tank to fix this problem.

Ford ranger 1988 gas gauge dont work

the fuel sender and the gauge needs to be checked. the wires run along the driver side frame rail. inside of the wire loom, look for a yellow wire w/ a red or grey stripe. test it with a ohm meter. the resistance reads between 240 ohms(empty) to 70 ohms(full). if you test and find reading betweeen 240 & 70 ohms, safe to say that that sender in the tank is fine. if you ground that wire directly to the chaasis, the gauge should max out to full. Good luck.

Acting like it is running out of gas

have you tried to use an additive to your gas that cleans the injectors and carburetor? "Berrymans" fuel cleaner is the best out there.
