If you take and pressure wash the motor capartment out at a car wash and then have a friend turn your steering wheel back and forth while you look ant the hoses you should see if the hoses have a small leak now never use your hand to check for a leak becuse the power steering systme is a hydralic system and if there is a pin hole and your hand is there the fluid can actually pierce the skin and rip off flesh but you should be able to see the leak just dont grab the hoses while the car is running.
hope this is usefull for you. and please rate my solutions
thank you

My variable steering effort light comes on after I be driving a long time what do I do it is a 2005 grand Prix

If you haven't been losing or having to add Power Steering fluid it sounds like it could be your pressure sensor module. They are usually down on the rack and pinon device. I am assuming you do not have any Power Steering hoses leaking. YOU might put some card board under your Vehicle motor at evenings if your work Days. If in the morning and you pull the card board out you will either have fluid on it or not. If their is fluid and is red in color it is most likely your Power Steering hose and needs replace. Some are easier than other to change. you have a suction hose that pulls the Fluid in and the ptessure hose to move pressure Fluid out. Good Luck.

NO POWER STEERING with leak could it be the rack the leak is in the center below the the motor

Yes, that is where the rack is. But if it is a hose or hose fitting that is leaking, it is not as bad as the rack itself leaking. Big expense there, replacing a rack and pinion gear assembly. Where you see the leaking fluid would be about where the PS hoses connect to the rack, so you should have it looked at to really know how bad it is.

Power steering leaking is leaking by the boot at the wheel

Just need to replace the rack/pinion unit with a rebuilt from your local parts place. A common problem.

Steering hard to turn to the left like power steering is out but turns ok to the right. Checked power steering fluid. It is OK

bad steering problems,,your steering rack most likely, but, have you recently been stuck in ditch? when wheels are straight, look at front of car when parked. do wheels look funny? one going one way, and the other going the other? may be alignment. is it leaking any fluid on either side of the front of the car? drivers side? passenger side? if it's not out of alignment,,,wheels out of alignment,,the steering rack is the problem. it may be faulty. if not leaking fluid,it may still be bad. first i would make a visual test look under the vehicle while someone turned the steering wheel to right and left while car is in park, emergency brake on!! look at the steering arms while they turn the steering wheel from right to left. no fluid leaks? any resistance in turning the wheel? any leaks,if so,go to leak and repair with steering line replacement.no leaks? suspect a bad steering rack. hope this helps and thank you for choosing fixya.com i love to volunteer

Power steering fluid leaking pretty good on 2005 chevy impala. not from pressure line ithink. any clues

The power steering pump is belt driven. It is on the engine where you put fluid in. There are two lines that run from the power steering pump to the power steering rack on the firewall. The fluid can leak from the pump, either of the lines or the rack itself. If you are handy you may be able to repair the problem by replacing the bad part. Wear safety glasses when looking for the leak and do not touch the fluid leak when the engine is running. The pressure is high enough to hurt you. If you ignore the problem you will eventually loose the power assist and may be unable to steer the car. Fix it now!

One line is high pressure and the other is a return line. Check them with the engine off and when you think you've found the leak staret the car and look for the leak. If it sprays like a water hose DO NOT TOUCH THE LEAK. The pressure is high enough to cause serious injury.

Leaking power steerring fluid. Garage said replace

thats about right, but a 2005 needing a rack, it is possible but i would get a second garage to look , take it somewhere else, dont tell them you were told it needs a rack, just tell them you have a p/s leak. this way you have two estimates and you will know for sure its the rack.hope this helps.

My 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP has a power steering leak but seems to work well. my mechanic wants to replace the whole rack and pinion, but that seems extensive for a leak. any suggestions?

Anytime a power steering compononent is leaking it requires replacement. whether or not you choose to replace it is up to you. if you lose all power steering fluid you will lose your power assist however mechanical steering ability is still maintained.

This is definitely a power steering problem. I had this same problem about a year ago. I had to get my Power Steering Rack replaced, this fixed the noise and problem. You can add power steering fluid as a temporary fix, but your problem will not permanently go away. You are probably leaking fluid out of your steering rack.

The sound that you are hearing probably happens more often when you are acclerating around a turn, right?? Does it sound like a little foreign car in reverse?? Also, the wheel may be a little stiff when first starting out.
