Question about 2004 Chrysler Concorde

1 Answer

We just recently broke the gear shift cable in the steering column and the car will not start anymore. We have had it started for the starter so we could drive it home. The battery, fuses and starter are fine.. we only get a clicking of the locks and the lights on in dash when we turn key. Anyone have any idea what the problem is

Make sure it's all the way in park. Or the shift cable could be broken and now it is in reverse or drive not allowing you to start it. I had to climb under the car and manually shift it into park. MAKE SURE YOU EMERGENCY BRAKE IS ON! If you car truely is in park and you manually shift it into any other gear and it is on an incline it will run you over!

94 camaro z28 automatic shifte was stiff jerked it to first gear like a idiot now stuck in first starts up in first still got underneath I can change gears w transmission lever but shift cable in park only...

If the car starts in first, it sounds like you have a problem with the lock cable. There should be a cable from steering column to shifter that prevents the shifter from moving out of park.

Remove the center console and examine the cables. Disconnect the one from the steering column and see if that frees up the shifter. If it does, you will need to find out what is jamming the steering column. Check the cable for frays 1st. Then make sure you didn't drop something down the center console, last look at the cable connection behind the ignition key.... when you are poking around the steering column, disconnect the battery and let is sit for a few minutes or you risk the air-bags blowing up in your face.

A long time ago, I melted a gear shift cable when I didn't have a good ground on the engine block. When the car started, the power when through the shifter cable and it must have gone red hot and melted.

Why cant I shift my 99 mercury sable sedan into gears from the steering column anymore? Why do I have to put it on the gear I need, put on the emergency break, then have to get out to shift it into g

Sounds like a shift cable or rod broke. This is dangerous as you probably figured out. Some emergency brakes do not work well for Reverse either. There is so little fabric on the Emergency brake that you are lucky it still works for you.

There is a safety lockout on the gearshift which requires a foot on the brake pedal. Otherwise you could just move the gearshift back and forth and see that the shifter is no longer connected to the transmission.

Look at some autoparts sites for the shift cable assembly. Once you see what is a good assembly you should be able to see where yours is broke. Youtube may have a video to show how to repair your car.

I have a problem. I have a 94 lincoln. It wont go into gear. The automatic gear shift drops all the way down with no shifting

Most likely, either the shift tube is damaged/broken or the screws have backed out of the lever at the end of the shift tube that the shift cable connects to. If the shift lever feels really "floppy", then you probably have a broken shift tube. You will probably have to pull the steering column down to get a good look at the shift tube to see if it is broken and to see how much play is in the shift tube bushings. Also look to see if the lever at the end of the shift tube is loose (shift cable lever).

A little word of caution: If you take the steering column down, be sure to disconnect the shift indicator cable first so it does not get broken. There is a tiny screw in the plastic braket that must be removed then the cable loop will simply slip off of the nipple on the shift tube arm.

Anyway, you will need a T-30 torx bit to work on the shift tube, the shift tube bushings and the lever at the end of the shift tube.

I made you a graphic below to help you understand what I am saying. Please note that it is NOT necessary to remove the steering wheel to do this, but you will need to remove the upper steering column shrouds if the shift tube bushings are loose.

I have 91 ford explorer and the transmission was not slipping. I parked it one day and it no longer shifts into gear. This is an automatic. Could the drive shaft be out or does this sound like a shift...

First thing check your fluid level, its low enough it won't go into gear and if its full, then check your shift linkage, it should be cable and it may have broke and last if the cable and fluid are good, check the shifter column thats attached to the steering column if its loose or worn out it could prevent it from going into gear.

HOW DO YOU REPLACE THE SHIFT INDICATOR? MINE STAYS IN PARK NO MATTER WHAT GEAR YOU PUT IT IN

First order a new one from a Ford dealer(about $40). Remove the lower dash panel under the steering wheel. remove the instrument trim panel.
Most of the time its just the mount on the steering column. if so remove the cable from the column, remove the wheel, insert the cable in the new bracket. when done shift the selector to drive and adjust. Start car run through gears and check again in drive.
