Question about 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Noise when stepping on brakes

I have a 2006 HHR and sometimes when I step on the brake it makes a noise. It almost sounds if something was scratching the disc. I took it to a tire shop because I thought my brakes were out and was told they are still in good condition. They were unable to tell me what the noise was.

After a couple visits to our local mechanics for brakes repair of a 2006 chevy siverado short bed reg cab. My rear brakes are the problem first the mechanics changed them out with premium pad then now...

Make sure the mechanic checked the park brake shoes inside the rear rotors, they quite often break away from the lining and get wedged in the rotor, sometimes causing a constant squeal noise. I've also seen the brake pad anti-rattle metal clips become loose and wander in the caliper bracket, they lightly rub against the rotor and cause a squealing noise similar to worn brake pads. They are also very bad for the backing plates rusting out prematurely and rubbing on the inside of the rotor. Other than that he can just try to champher the edges of both front and rear pads to help dissipate the brake dust, from collecting and causing squeak noises.

My wife got in the vehicle and it made a strange noise when she stepped on the brake petal. Not sure what it could be. The vehicle is driveable.

if the wheels are loosing traction (ice or snowy roads) she could be hearing the anti lock brakes they make a moaning sound sometimes. It is normal if you have anti lock brakes

A rumbling noise gets louder the faster you go,the car is quiet when in park and no vibrations when it is reved up

Sounds like a wheel bearing.

If you jack up each wheel in turn and spin the wheel (make sure the parking brake is off and transmission is in neutral) the offending bearing will produce the rumbling noise.

Horrible scraping/scratching noise coming from wheel

Hello, this would be an easy thing to diagnose. All you need to do is jack up the front of the car, so that you can turn the wheel and listen to it while you wiggle and turn it manually. You're also checking for any wobble and wear in the front end parts at the same time. Next, remove the wheel and inspect the rotor for any scratching to the shiny surface, which could determine where the problem is. If no problem there, rotate rotor and listen for the scratching sound and you will see where its coming from by looking at the brake pads which are visible when the wheel is off.

Toyota Camry 2005-Brake pads noise problem

The rear brakes should last from 30000 to 60000 miles or 50000 to 100000 kms. So something is wearing out your brakes too fast. Are you doing the work or some shop. I also assume you have discs and not drums since you mention pads and calipers. I am not certain but usually you need a tool to turn the pistion in when putting in new pads. I would make sure the pads are releasing properly by raising rear of car, stepping on brakes a few times (with engine off and try see if wheels are free by spinning by hand, also try to use handbrake a few times and release it and see if wheels spin freely. Maybe rears always applied. Notice burning smell, are discs glazed from heat? Are you using really cheap pads. Also check the proportioning valve which will decrease pressure to rear brakes during hard braking. Do you notice rear wheels squeling during hard braking. Do you have antilock brake system? Also are you using good quality pads and rotors.

2006 Dodge Neon makes a loud noise when I brake.

Neons are known to have brake noise esspecially from the rear. Try driving while holding the parking brake up for a while. Dont do it for to long but just enough to clear all the rust out of the drums. I work at a dealer and that has fixed countless noise complaints. However, if its more of a howling noise it make be one of the rear wheel bearings.

Brakes make squeaky noises along with other noises

There are a numer of reasons brakes will squeak or squeal. Sometimes excessive dust acculation wll cause it, yet another cause is the TYPE of material the brake shoes are made of. The harder the brake shoe material , the more tendency to squeak / squeal. My suggestion is use high quality brakes such as OE brakes. Hope this helps.
