Question about 1989 Ford Thunderbird

Thunderbird alternator constantly needs replacing

89 thunderbird, i've had it for about 8 or 9 months and i've gone through three alternators. the belt is probably still factory, if not, it's seen better days. i guess my only thoughts are either an electrical problem (possibly shorting out somewhere and shortening the life of the alternator) or not enough tension on the pulley somehow causing it to burn out? thanks

it has not, it has also been suggested that the battery could posibly not be holding a full charge therefore causing more drain on the alternator.

got a new (refurbished) alternator with connector, and put a good (better) battery in. the old connector did look pretty crappy. thanks!

did you have it tested when you bought it. it could be the voltage regulater or your battery

the problem is not the alternator but the connector to it, replace it. has it been replaced?

Have the battery tested most parts stores will do this for free, autzone and kragen both do, yes a low battery burns out Alternators very quickly, also buy the Alt repair connector from Ford and replace it, this most likely is the problem, a poor connection at the Alternator, that to destroys the Alt quickly..

Why alternator don't charge on a 1979 ford thunderbird?

If you can use a new wire and they charge the battery then most likely you have a broken wire in the harness that runs between the alternator and the regulator.

An alternator is normally grounded by the bolts holding it to the slide mount and swivel mount. If they recommend an additional ground and put a ground wire on, then connect that wire to any metal place on the engine.

Had the same problem. Likely the fusible links. Get a Haynes manual with wiring diagram in the back (should be around $15 or so at an auto parts store). I also had to replace the air intake duct and several components of the thermactor air system. One other thought is that the new alternator is not putting out a charge, you might want to check that if you believe everything else is okay. I once replaced an alternator and the new alternator was defective. --Mark

89 thunder bird. Not charging

Did you hook up the wires from the correctly? Some batteries have the pos and neg reversed on the mounting posts. You may need to double check battery cables and alternator cables are charging. If you have a volt meter, you can perform more diagnostic tests on your own. Like testing output of alternator to ensure you are putting out the correct polarity.
