Smelled gas and check engine light came on. Periodically have smelled gas over the past 6 months or so. What is cause?

Hi Ed.
this is all i could find at the moment.
Gas Cap Causing Gasoline Smell in Car. I know it may seem obvious, but a loose or missing gas cap can cause a fuel smell in your vehicle. You could even have a faulty gas cap that is leaking fumes. A faulty gas cap can also cause the check engine light to illuminate with a DTC on newer cars.

Stopped while driving cranks but won,t start replaced spark plugs and wires old plugs smelled like gasoline

"Old plugs smelled". Likely no spark. Coil packs, distributor, points (if your car has points), etc. If you share your car make/model/year/engine, somebody might have one and know where to look. Without that info, I can only guess.

The engine oil smells like gasoline. Why is this happening and how can I fix it?

If the oil smells like the fuel then does you engine knock or lost compression? fuel can leak past the piston if the rings are bad and the vehicle doesn't start easily.

Modern synthetic oils can smell different so borrow another nose for a second opinion.

Also test the oil... put a single drop in a metal pan and throw a match at it. Oil wont ignite straight away and will burn slow only once it has reached ignition temperature, any fuel in the oil will cause an explosive flash almost immediately

Gas in the oil

When a fuel injector is stuck open, the fuel will flood out. Gasoline will definitely get into the oil when this is the case.

If the fuel pressure in your car is too high (above 7 psi) that may cause gasoline to get into the engine oil.

Gas could also leak into your intake manifold if there is a carburetor problem.

An inoperative injector system can also cause this problem, because if the engine is not firing appropriately, the gasoline will end up running down the walls of the cylinders.

Check to see if the float in the gas tank is rising the way it should be rising or if it needs an adjustment. You will not be able to look at your gas gauge and get an accurate reading If the float is not functioning properly.

Your engine may be running rich, with too much gas going into the engine and too little air.

Check to see if the oil level might be really high. This can also cause trouble

Two ways to tell if you may have a problem with gas in your engine oil are:
1. If you start to smell a strong odor of gasoline while you are driving.
2. You notice white clouds of smoke coming out of your tailpipe.

If a large amount of gasoline does get into the engine oil, change the oil immediately upon fixing the problem that has allowed this to happen.

91 Maxima Gasoline odor when I first start the car

If it is running fine, the busted bolt isn't the source of the gasoline smell. The intake manifold has vacuum, so the smell wouldn't be getting out, air would be going in, and a vacuum leak would give you poor idling. The exhaust manifold wouldn't have much raw gasoline smell. But it would have loud noise if the broken bolt were causing an exhaust leak.

Check that the vapor recovery line is not broken or disconnected. The hose connectors get cracked. If that were broken, it would cause a gasoline smell after the car has been sitting, especially if it has been sitting in the sun, heat driving gasoline vapor out of the tank. It is supposed to condense in the vapor canister, but some escapes if the line is broken. If it is broken, driving would **** out the gasoline from the line and the wind would dissipate the smell.

Or it could be a leaking injector. With the injector cover off, engine idling and cool, you can visually look for raw gas around the injectors and injector rail connections.

Hope this helps.
