Question about 1991 Honda Accord

Car rev up and down at startup, also car jerks at release of gas

I have a 1991 Honda Accord EX-R. This is really two problems but i suspect they are related. When i start my car, the idle rpm will jump from between about 800rpm to about 2200rpm. It constantly revs up then cuts to 800rpm the immediatly revs up to 2200rpm the cuts back over and over until the car warms up about 5 minutes later afterwich the idle is perfect. The second part to this riddle is when im driving the car say down the highway with my foot on the gas at a constant speed, if i either let up slightly or take my foot off the gas the car will hold that rpm and speed for a second and a half and all of a sudden drop rpm and the car jerks as if someone were to punch the brake pedal. You can then imagine how hard it is to keep a constant speed. I can answer any question please help ive been driving like this for about 6 months.

There is a vacuum leak somewhere in the intake system. A very common problem on these cars is a PCV valve that gets stuck open and replacing that first is very cheap. If that doesn't solve the problem, then you'll have to go hunting. Listening very carefully for a hissing sound in the engine compartment will often lead you to a hose that is off or a gasket that has failed. You can also spray small amounts of aerosol carb cleaner at suspect areas to confirm the leak. The engine will change revs when fed the carb cleaner.

This sounds like a vacuum control problem. Since part of the problem is when the engine is cold; a thermal switch is venting vacuum until the engine warms up enough to shut down the thermal switch, thus restoring a steady idle. Vacuum can be affecting high rpms while running too. You could have a misrouted EGR vacuum line opening the valve at the wrong time. There are sometimes hose routing decals on the radiator shroud or under the hood. These can be visibly checked.

I suggest you have a transmission shop take a close look at your vehicle. That year accord with a v6 and automatic transmission had a recall for the transmission and your problem seems to be a slowly dying tranny.

You may have a cracked head, block or blown head gasket that is leaking combustion gas into the cooling system. If you dont have a combution leak detector kit you can take it to a trusted mechanic tell them the problems you've had and the parts you've replaced. Ask them to check for a combustion leak in the cooling system. A minor combustion leak in the cooling system can sometimes mimic the symptoms of overheating.

It is probably your throttle position sensor on your throttle body. I motorcycle had that same problem. It was a recall. Maybe honda can help in that regard

Further clarification on the O2 sensor location: It is in the exhaust pipe, under the center of the car, on top of the pipe, just aft of the oil filter.
