Question about 1987 Chevrolet Caprice

1 Answer

A/C leaks I retrofitted my 1987 Caprice Classic V6 with the newer R134 A/C refridgerant. Each year it leaks out. The R134 molecule smaller and diffuses out of the rubber hoses and probably the seals. Is there a way of fixing this problem?. I know the newer hoses are barrier resistant but what about the seals? Thanks

You'll have to replace the seals. The seals were meant for the R-12 freon.
If I remember right, the R-134A freon works under higher pressure also. Therefore, that won't help the hoses and seals with R-12 grade hold in the refridgerant.

If you have someone do it, you'll have to call around for that. Prices depends on where you live and how much they can get the parts for. I live in southern California, so prices are a bit much here. Tax, regulations, recycle fees, and etc.

The seals shouldn't cost much, but the hoses are a different story.

You're probally looking at $20 or less for all the seals, and maybe $100 to $175 for each hose.

Best to call around autoparts stores for prices.

1996 was the last production year for the Caprice in the USA.

What type of freon goes in a 84 chevy caprice

R12 but its not available anymore so use R134 ,it will work ok but not be as cold as the radiator is too small to cool the gas properly ,but it will work i promise ,you will need an adaptor to fill the older system though and the gas will mix with the R 12 so ignore the so called technical salemans stuff to sell you a retrofit kit ,it does work because i do it often on older american cars that collectors have here in spain .

Why the ac on my 2000 lincoln ls is no working

chances are that its just low on R134 refrigerant ... .. thats the new stuff that replaced freon (R12) years ago ... R134 is a smaller molicule so it leaks out much more easily ... in many cars it has to be topped off periodically ...there are kits available (with a gage) that will allow you to top off the R134 yourself if you are mecanically inclined ... if not then professional places can test for leaks and other problems and recharge your system.

You have a leak in the ac system, u will have to have the system leak tested and the leak repaired before adding anymore very expensive R134 refridgerent.

Want to replace fron in 93 ford probe

1993 is a split year, if you have charging ports are a little bigger than the size of a tire valve stem then u have R12, if they are big then you have R134, most all Ford in 93 use R12. In the picture are adapters for a retrofit to R134, these screw on an R12 port, note the large cap R134 cap on the end of the adapter.

R12 freon has been discontinued due to ozone depletion there for we have r 134a which is just as good but wont hurt the attmosphere you can do a conversion to 134 by changing the fittings to put freon in system you dont have to really change anything else

FILLING UP THE FREON IN MY 2000 NISSAN MAXIMA SE

2000 maxima is filled with R134, not freon. You don't need retro fit kit. Get couple of cans of R134 and pump it into the low side valve /small fiting, while A/C compressor is engaged. If your compressor is not coming on, jump the low side pressure switch to make the compressor come on and than the R134 will get sucked in to your system through the low side line. The proper way to do this is to put a/c system under vaccum for 15 minutes at least and watch for leak/gauges coming/loosing vaccum. Than pump R134 into the HIGH side valve with engine OFF.
